The Lord of the Rings: The Two Tower,
Spider-Man Nab 5 Nominations Each
Pass the popcorn and hold the butter. It’s time for the nominees to the 2003 MTV Movie Awards. The12th annual edition of the show will be taped May 31 at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium and air June 5 at 9 p.m.

MTV/MTV2/MTV Films President Van Toffler hopped into a phone both to change into his SuperVan costume to comment, "From Spider-Man to Barbershop to Gangs of New York, this year’s MTV Movie Award nominees are truly reflective of our audience’s adventurous tastes. This year’s show will not only celebrate the diversity of film we’ve seen over the last year, but bring together some of the biggest names for a night of superhuman fun. Now, please excuse me while I re-enact the final scene from Y Tu Mama Tambien with Carson Daly."

Tenth Planet ProductionsJoel Gallen will once again serve as executive producer of the show, which has added a Best Virtual Performance category. "For this year’s superhero theme, we plan on mounting the funniest, loudest, most high-flying show to date."

Last year’s edition was the most watched show in the show’s 11-year history, averaging more than 7 million viewers.

Aside from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Tower and Spider-Man, which top the list of nominated films with five nods apiece, Best Movie nominees include 8 Mile, Barbershop and The Ring.

Eminem, who won an Oscar for Best Song, is up for Best Male Performance, with Vin Diesel (XXX), Leonardo DiCaprio (Catch Me If You Can), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) and Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings).

Reese Witherspoon (Sweet Home Alabama), Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man), Halle Berry (Die Another Day), Queen Latifah (Chicago) and Kate Hudson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) are up for Best Female Performance.

Mike Myers (Austin Powers in Goldmember), Will Ferrell (Old School), Cedric the Entertainer (Barbershop), Adam Sandler (Mr. Deeds) and Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) will vie for Best Comedic Performance. Myers’ Goldmember is also up for Best Villain, along with Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man), Colin Farrell (Daredevil), Daveigh Chase (The Ring) and Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs of New York).

Eminem also tops the Breakthrough Male category, along with Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down), Ryan Reynolds (National Lampoon’s Van Wilder), Nick Cannon (Drumline) and Independent Spirit Award winner Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher).

My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos heads the list of Breakthrough Female category nominees with Beyonce Knowles (Austin Powers in Goldmember), Jennifer Garner (Daredevil), Eve (Barbershop), Kate Bosworth (Blue Crush) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary).

The ever-popular Best Kiss category pits Maguire/Dunst (Spider-Man) against Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner (Daredevil), Nick Cannon and Zoe Saldana (Drumline), DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz (Gangs of New York) and Sandler and Emily Watson (Punch-Drunk Love).

In the newly added Best Virtual Performance category, it’ll be Stars WarsYoda vs. Kangaroo Jack, Lord of the RingsGollum, Dobby from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Scooby-Doo.
