YAHOO! LAUNCHES LAUNCH—WHAT'S FOR LUNCH?

New Music Destination Includes Audio/Video Streams, Downloads, More
Unveiling the results of its acquisition of Launch Media, Inc. earlier this year, Yahoo! has introduced its new music site, dubbed LAUNCH, Your Yahoo! Music Experience. That name may be quite a mouthful, but what the Net's biggest Web portal is promising the new service will do is an even bigger one.

Yahoo! says LYYME (as we'll call it) will become the "premier music destination for consumers, advertisers and artists." And we thought those three groups couldn't stand one another. Yes, the combination of the former Yahoo! Music and Launch.com promises a comprehensive smorgasbord of music-related stuff, including webcasts, downloads, music news, photos, charts and reviews, as well as shopping and auctions.

"This represents a significant initiative to give consumers the ability to watch, listen to and control their own music experience," the company says in a press release. Watch, listen and control? Sounds like it was made to order for John Ashcroft.

Available at http://launch.yahoo.com or from a "music" button on Yahoo!'s homepage, LYYME allows users access to on-demand music videos, customizable Launchcast stations and a plethora of music-related features. LYYME is run by Launch co-founders Dave Goldberg and Bob Roback, who intend to provide the proverbial compelling experience for consumers while providing the proverbial valuable marketing platform for record labels, artists and advertisers.

"Our new Launch destination strengthens our leadership in the online entertainment space," notes Yahoo! EVP North American Operations Greg Coleman in the release. "The integration will allow us to build deeper relationships with our consumers and provide enhanced solutions for our marketing and advertising clients. And no, I never appeared on Different Strokes."

"We are excited that the integration is completed and we are confident that we have built a solid foundation to maximize all opportunities in the digital music space," Goldberg says. "With Launch and Yahoo! Music fully integrated, consumers, advertisers and artists have the premier global music destination for all their needs. In short, we are now all things to all people and will be turning water into wine on an expedited timetable."
