HITS LOSERS’ FAVES OF 2001

Believe It or Not, Some People Who Work Here Actually Like Music
While HITS employees aren't paid in real money, they do get all the CDs they can carry away with them. Remarkably, these poor souls actually keep and listen to some of the tens of thousands of shiny round things that litter the HITS cesspool, as you'll see...

DAVID SIMUTIS
Top 10 albums I played on the way to work. Great for singing along to while driving down Ventura Blvd.

1. Ryan Adams, Gold (Lost Highway/IDJ): Whatever everybody else on this list says goes double for me, though there’s nothing as heartbreaking as 2000’s song of the year, “Come Pick Me Up.”
2. Superchunk, Here’s to Shutting Up (Merge): Smart punk rock hits its 30s, thinks about buying a house, raising a family, figures out how to write quiet songs.
3. Fugazi, Furniture EP (Dischord): No irony intended.
4. Rival Schools, United By Fate (Island): This is a revolution…with guitars.
5. Remy Zero, Golden Hum (Elektra): I’d be bummed too, if I was divorced from Alyssa Milano.
6. Pete Yorn, musicforthemorningafter (Columbia): Guarantee his next record will either be a total bomb or totally the bomb. (Do the kids still say things are “the bomb”?)
7. Creeper Lagoon, Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday (DreamWorks): Issued “Wrecking Ball,” the guitar anthem of the year…and then they pretty much disintegrated.
8. Pernice Brothers, The World Won’t End (Ashmont): Sad songs say so much. Worth seeking out.
9. Timbaland & Magoo, Indecent Proposal (Blackground): The greatest producer in the world saves his best beats for himself. And it’s dirty too.
10. Jimmy Eat World, Bleed American (DreamWorks): The kids are alright. (Do old people still call them “the kids”?)
