2. Superchunk, Here’s to Shutting Up (Merge): Smart punk rock hits its 30s, thinks about buying a house, raising a family, figures out how to write quiet songs.
3. Fugazi, Furniture EP (Dischord): No irony intended.
4. Rival Schools, United By Fate (Island): This is a revolution…with guitars.
5. Remy Zero, Golden Hum (Elektra): I’d be bummed too, if I was divorced from Alyssa Milano.
6. Pete Yorn, musicforthemorningafter (Columbia): Guarantee his next record will either be a total bomb or totally the bomb. (Do the kids still say things are “the bomb”?)
7. Creeper Lagoon, Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday (DreamWorks): Issued “Wrecking Ball,” the guitar anthem of the year…and then they pretty much disintegrated.
8. Pernice Brothers, The World Won’t End (Ashmont): Sad songs say so much. Worth seeking out.
9. Timbaland & Magoo, Indecent Proposal (Blackground): The greatest producer in the world saves his best beats for himself. And it’s dirty too.
