SOME GREAT, AND SOME NOT-SO-GREAT, GRAMMY MOMENTS

A Trip Through Awards Ceremonies Past, Without the Drugs
While the highlight of the Grammy ceremony this year will no doubt be NARAS boss Mike Greene's electrifying speech, there have been other memorable moments, and not just the Bruce Vilanch-penned jokes read on the Teleprompter. Here's a special HITS look back at some of the landmark broadcast's best moments:

May 4, 1959: Henry Mancini wins the inaugural Album of the Year statue for The Music From Peter Gunn, while Domenico Modugno takes Song and Record of the Year for "Nel Blu Dipinto (Volare)." While Mancini would go on to win 20 more Grammys in his career, Modugno would do lots more stuff in Italian. That night the two jointly celebrate their wins by partying all night with Grammy groupies and trashing their hotel rooms.

March 16, 1966: Frank Sinatra takes home Album of the Year award for September of My Years, while Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' "A Taste of Honey" wins Record of the Year, foreshadowing landmark band A Taste of Honey's Best New Artist win in 1979. A Taste of Honey would later find more success as the butt of Grammy jokes.

March 14, 1972: In honor of Bill Cosby winning Best Recording For Children for Bill Cosby Talks to Kids About Drugs, a streaker runs across the stage. In the late '80s, Cosby would play the album for Lisa Bonet, prompting her appearance in Angel Heart with Mickey Rourke.

February 28, 1976: Captain and Tenille win Record of the Year for "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Natalie Cole wins Best New Artist. The Ohio Players take Best Album Package for Honey. Millions of teenage boys celebrate the victory in private.

February 15, 1979: Saturday Night Fever wins Album of the Year, as the Grammys get hipper by dumping host Andy Williams in favor of disco dynamo John Denver.

February 28, 1984: Michael Jackson's Thriller wins a then-record eight Grammys, including Best Performance by an Ever-Shrinking Nose. Culture Club win Best New Artist. Millions of teenage boys celebrate the victory in private.

February 22, 1989: In a move as hip as getting John Denver to host, NARAS gives the inaugural Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance award to Jethro Tull. Bobby McFerrin's Record and Song of the Year winner, "Don't Worry, Be Happy," annoys its way into human consciousness.

February 21, 1990: Artist development, artist development, artist development... Milli Vanilli wins Best New Artist, though they later lose the trophy. Not forfeit, just misplace it. Even later, they forfeit the trophy.

February 25, 1998: N.Y. mayor Rudy Giuliani and Mike Greene set the tone when the nominations were announced in January by feuding openly. In the actual ceremony, Bob Dylan is upstaged by Soy Bomb, while Ol' Dirty Bastard forgets to take his medications. Or maybe he just smoked them all at once.

February 23, 2001: Santana wins eight Grammys, including Best Album, tying Michael Jackson for the most wins. Eminem and Elton John perform together, doing "Candle in the Windpipe"—a song about the fragility of life and killing your babymama.

February 27, 2002: The feud between Dick Clark and Mike Greene culminates in Greene switching Clark's Viagra with host Jon Stewart's Prozac. While Clark remains mellow, Stewart stiffs in his MC role.
