2002 MOVIE AWARDS
MTV announced its 2002 Movie Award nominees this morning, with The Lord of the Rings grabbing six nominations, including Best Movie, Best Male Performance (Elijah Wood), Best Villain (Christopher Lee), Breakthrough Male (Orlando Bloom), Best Action Sequence and Best Fight. The Fast & the Furious received five nods, while Rush Hour 2, Moulin Rouge and Shrek nabbed four apiece.
The 11th annual show will return to L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium, where it will be taped June 1 for airing June 6 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). Once again, Tribute to Heroes producer Joel Gallen’s Tenth Planet Productions will co-executive-produce the show with MTV’s Salli Frattini.
MTV/MTV2 President Van Toffler said the event is "not your typical awards show… Critically acclaimed or not, these are the movies that our audience went out to see and the MTV Movie Awards celebrates the very essence of why these movies are made—to entertain and offer a fantastic escape for our audience."
Last year, 20 million viewers watched the primetime or repeat telecast.
Aside from The Lord of the Rings and The Fast & the Furious, other Best Movie nominees included Legally Blonde, Black Hawk Down and Shrek. For Best Actor, in addition to Rings’ Wood, nominees included A Beautiful Mind’s Russell Crowe, Fast & Furious’ Vin Diesel, Pearl Harbor’s Josh Hartnett and Ali’s Will Smith. Best Female Performance nominees are Pearl Harbor’s Kate Beckinsale, Monster’s Ball’s Halle Berry, Tomb Raider’s Angelina Jolie, Moulin Rouge’s Nicole Kidman and Legally Blonde’s Reese Witherspoon. Rapper DMX (Exit Wounds) received a nom for Breakthrough Male, while Britney Spears and Mandy Moore were up for Breakthrough Female.
