WEEK IN PREVIEW:
GRAMMY WHAMMY!

O Brother, Alanis Vie for the Top of Album Chart
People may have changed the channel when Grammy boss Mike Greene made his speech, but they paid attention to winners and performers—and they’re buying those records.

Last week’s Grammys have had as much sales impact as any in recent history, ranking up there with the legendary sales boosts that Santana and Bonnie Raitt experienced following their wins; J Records’ multiple winner Alicia Keys looks to double last week’s sales.

But the biggest winner on the album chart is also the winner of Album of the Year, as Mercury/IDJ’s O Brother Where Art Thou ST could vault to #1. This is a record whose sales react to anything and everything, so a Grammy spike should surprise you only if you’ve been living in the woods for a year and a half. It could also be Maverick/Reprise’s Alanis Morrisette at the top. Keep watching. That’s why we call it the "Building Album Sales Chart."

There’s plenty more action, with Capitol’s Kylie Minogue bowing at a strong #3 and Warner Bros.Cher entering in the Top 10. Loud/Columbia’s X-ecutioners should debut just outside the Top 10. U2 (Interscope), Train (Columbia) India.Arie (Motown/Universal) and UTV’s Grammy Nominees 2002 compilation are having sizable post-Grammy sales bumps.

Streeting Tuesday are Atlantic’s Brandy and RCA’s Natalie Imbruglia.

The atom-splitters in radio say that Def Soul’s Musiq and MCA’s Mary J. Blige should be most added at Crossover. Over in Top 40, it looks like most added will be Virgin’s Lenny Kravitz and DreamWorksJimmy Eat World, with Goldmind/Elektra’s Tweet getting heavy adds—though it already has a number of stations on it in advance of the official add date. Look for clean-up adds on TVT’s Default, A&M/Interscope’s Sheryl Crow and MCA’s Res. India.Arie will also have increased radio action. In the PoMo world, Warner Bros.’ Earshot and Columbia’s Quarashi should be the big winners. And as usual, we’re big losers.
