CELINE TAKES ROUND TWO

Josh Groban Gets 20/20 Vision, Goo Goos Go Go and Ashanti Fights to the End
Not since Canada’s gold medal win in hockey at the Winter Olympics has a nation rejoiced as it’s rejoicing right now. Do not fret, you nutty Canucks—after being exiled to #2 for a week, your Canadian icon has regained her rightful hold on #1. Hail, Canada… HAIL, CELINE!

Hey, she had a nice week.

Yes, folks, two weeks after debuting at #1 with sales north of 500k—and a week after being dethroned by Murder Inc./IDJ’s Ashanti’s 500k #1 debut—Epic’s Celine Dion took back the #1 spot, barely edging the R&B newcomer in one of the closest battles our drug-addled brains can recall.

"It’s an incredible record, and it’s going to be selling well for a long time," said HMV’s Jeff Davidson, who plans on congratulating Celine as soon as he learns to speak Canadian. "But take nothing away from Ashanti. For a new artist to battle an established superstar for #1 is a remarkable accomplishment." Speaking of accomplishments, how about Jeff’s use of four-syllable words?

The Top Five is rounded out by UTV’s Now Vol. 9, WB’s debuting Goo Goo Dolls and Lost Highway/IDJ’s O Brother Where Art Thou? ST.

Other solid bows belong to Capitol’s Bonnie Raitt at #11 and Reprise’s Neil Young at #13.

But there lurks another story in our wacky Top 10. Check out the monster #8 album chart re-entry by Reprise’s Josh Groban. Yes, the album’s been out since November. Yes, it has floated around the Top 50 before. And yes, after Friday night’s ABC 20/20 profile,

every stinking person who watched it went right out and bought it. Can you say one week’s sales of more than 60k? "Yes, those are small words," said HMV’s Davidson.

And as long as we’re talking about sales growth, check out the 32% sales jump for Blue Note’s Norah Jones, which jumps 50-40 in her biggest sales week to date. This one is just beginning, folks.

As for next week’s chart…here comes Sheryl Crow.
