THE BEU SISTERS ARE DOIN’ IT
FOR THEMSELVES

Harmony-Singing Siblings Get Some Bigtime Support on Their S Curve/Virgin Debut Album
Sisterhood is powerful…at least that's the case with the four Beu SistersCandice (25), Christie (23), Jilaine (19) and Danielle (15).

The group’s debut S Curve/Virgin Records album, Decisions, comes out next week (10/8), preceded by the first single, "I Was Only (Seventeen)."

Said Exec. VP Promotion Hilary "Close" Shaev after lovingly polishing her bobblehead doll of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski: "They are different from the other pop acts in the marketplace because they're down-to-earth and authentic. This is a strong Top 40, female demo record—something every young girl can relate to."

The track is already several hundred spins deep at WAEB Allentown, PA, which has made it a top seller in Philadelphia, and it’s also getting airplay at WQZK Nashville.

The siblings—whose parents were Broadway performers—have been harmonizing all their lives. The girls’ parents divorced eight years ago, after moving the family from New York to Florida, and the sisters turned to music to help them cope.

"We knew there was magic," recalls Christie. "That gave us something to work for—a time when we wouldn’t have to worry about what tomorrow would bring."

After cutting an initial four-song demo in ’97, the Beu Sisters developed their songs by singing a cappella, with harmonies that could only be called "genetic." They opened for the likes of Billy Ray Cyrus, Bad Company and John Anderson. A videotaped performance found its way into the hands of songwriter Desmond Child, who invited the girls to audition at his Miami home, where S Curve’s Steve Greenberg (whose previous discoveries include Hanson and the Baha Men) immediately offered them a recording contract.

Said Greenberg: "Their four-part harmony is purely them. They really developed as songwriters when we started to record in New York. Their songs are authentic depictions of their lives in small-town Florida. The record’s about the singing, not the production. This is not manufactured."

The girls wrote and arranged the vocals for many of the songs themselves, collaborating with producer/ songwriters Mark Hudson (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi) and Mike Mangini (Digable Planets). Outside songs came from such unlikely sources as Redd Kross members Steve and Jeff McDonald along with former that dog leader Anna Waronker, who contributed "My Christmas Was in June."

Said S Curve GM Marty Maidenberg: "We’re trying to get a few believers up front and tell a story in each market—just continue to grow it. Everywhere it’s played, programmers are calling the song ‘a chick magnet.’"

Among the marketing/promotional initiatives:

  • The track "Catch Me If You Can" is included on a free CD compilation being handed out at McDonald’s. Three million discs were pressed for the promotion, dubbed "Mighty Meals" and sponsored by Radio Disney.
  • Promotional tie-in with teenage consumer site alloy.com and online grassroots marketing company 360 Youth.
  • Promotional appearance at Star 93.7’s "Taste of Boston" last week and an upcoming performance at WQZK "6th Party Birthday Bash" (10/18).
  • Press coverage in Rolling Stone, Seventeen, YM, Time Magazine for Kids.
  • Featured on MTV’s You Hear It First, airing this week.
