With its new, long-term affiliation agreement with Cablevision adding 2.5 million subscribers in the N.Y. market, MTV’s sister station now can be seen in a total of 40 million homes.
The announcement is part of a larger MTV Networks pact that also gives expanded distribution to TV Land on Cablevision.
Said MTV2 GM David Cohn: "This is further validation that MTV2 is a growing presence in the music industry. With our increased subscriber base, MTV2 now reaches more tastemakers and music fans, bringing increased value to the business of breaking new artists. And now you can even get the channel without rabbit ears and aluminum foil."
In addition, MTV said it will launch two new 24-hour digital music channels, both of which will be carried on Cablevision. MTVHits will encompass pop, and MTVJams will feature R&B, hip-hop and soul. The latter will replace MTV X across all digital cable services. The two join MTV Espaol among the Network’s digital offerings.
Commented MTV/MTV2 President Van Toffler: "Both MTVHits and MTVJams were developed in direct response to our audience’s tastes and demands. These two new channels give music fans a destination 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the music and artists they love. Now will you please excuse me, I have to go trim Mr. Redstone’s nose hairs."
