"This new agreement further demonstrates BMG’s commitment to giving consumers more flexibility in how they access and experience our artists’ music online."

WHAT’S GERMAN FOR "RHAPSODY"?

Online Service Cuts CD-Burning Pact With BMG; Reichstag-Burning to Be Negotiated Separately
Fresh from closing similar agreements with two other majors on behalf of its Rhapsody online service, Listen.com has secured a CD-burning licensing pact with BMG.

The deal, when added to the material licensed for burning by UMG and WMG, permits Rhapsody subscribers to burn more than 90,000 tracks—without causing the vein in Hilary Rosen’s forehead to throb in an unhealthy manner.

Of course, you’d need about 90 grand to burn that many, since it costs 99 cents a pop. That price point may be hard to swallow, but what the hell do you care? You get free CDs just by picking up the freakin’ telephone.

Rhapsody has separate licenses to stream music from all the majors and quite a few independent labels. The service can be accessed via Listen.com and affilated companies including DIRECTV Broadband, Time Warner’s Roadrunner ISP, Lycos, Charter Communications and quite a few more.

OK, OK, we’ll stop yakkin’ and get to those dynamite quotes.

"Since launching Rhapsody last December, we have been dedicated to offering our subscribers a superior online listening experience that gives them unlimited access to the music they love," exclaimed Listen Prexy/CEO Sean Ryan, in a rare mode of self-congratulation. "Today’s agreement with BMG builds on that principle, giving Rhapsody subscribers the freedom to enjoy an even wider selection of music both on- and offline. In the coming months, we will continue to add music to the service and offer subscribers more choice in how, when and where they listen. Did I mention subscriber freedom? Sorry, I’ve had an awful lot of schnapps."

"We are pleased to offer portability for BMG titles available through Rhapsody," intoned BMG COO Michael Smellie. "This new agreement further demonstrates BMG’s commitment to giving consumers more flexibility in how they access and experience our artists’ music online. And when I say ‘flexibility,’ I mean the kind completely controlled by us. Signing off."
