Where Prince And The Word "Virgin" Co-Exist For The First Time In Years

MORE POWER 2 YA
Napster
announced today that Prince and The NPG Music Club will debut and promote a new song from Prince's upcoming album, "The Rainbow Children," on the company's Featured Music Program, beginning Friday, April 6. Although Prince has released several singles over the Internet in the past, "The Work, Pt. 1" will be the first single released and promoted through a digital music company. In an unrelated story, a struggling music netco plans to change its name to an unpronounceable symbol to protest current market conditions.

MAGIX: MEET ITS MAKER
Magix Entertainment Corp has released its new MP3 Maker Gold 2.0. The new upgraded software allows users to convert, save, manage, import and record music on their PC, just as the previous version did, but 2.0 also features a turbo encoder to convert sound formats in seconds and burn up to 12 hours of music on one CD. The spoiler makes it turbo. Magix CEO/President Ken Alterwitz is pleased as punch with the upgrade. "MP3 Maker Gold is not only for the tech-savvy web surfers, but for anybody who enjoys listening to music. With our MP3 Maker Gold consumers can turn their PC into a high-powered digital jukebox and utilize the MP3 Maker's versatility to become masters of their own music collections," he gushed. "Speaking of masters, I am known online as Squirrelmaster—but that's another story."

RADIO FREE LUNCH?
Radio Free Virgin, the digital radio broadcasting arm of the Virgin Group, launched a new feature on its player today, one that allows users to record songs or blocks of songs from any of RFV's 40 stations. The company also announced a strategic partnership with Digital eStation to distribute the RFV player and music via its set-top box, the Digital eBox, which promises to deliver digital content on demand. Subscribers will have access to Radio Free Virgin through the eBox, rather than through a PC. Recording tracks to your hard drive the RFV way is legally sketchy, but time-shifting of content—such as using a VCR—is ostensibly legal, so we'll see who protests. Sure to bring the lawyers some dough is Audio Mill's BitBop Tuner. This software is as simple to use as Napster—and perhaps as nefarious. Users type in a list of artists that they like and the software scans thousands of Internet streams for the artists, "recording" songs for playback later. More interestingly, users can monitor in real time the song title and artists of stations that play the artists which users have listed as favorites, meaning that it's easy to sample similar artists to favorites. It's kind of like a channel guide for webcasts, and it's so simple even a copyright lawyer could use it.

iM TOTALLY COMPLACENT
iM Networks, Inc.
today announced a strategic alliance with Cablemusic Networks to complement each other's ad sales, content and technology initiatives. Under the agreement, iM Networks will act as a sales agent for Cablemusic, will act as cablemusic.com's main broadband distribution channel and will work to integrate Cablemusic's RIAA tracking and DMCA compliance technologies, allowing iM Networks to create and deploy similarly compliant "Best of PlanetTM" stations. We have no idea what all this means, but neither do you, so just nod your head sagely.
