Roughly two weeks after suffering what was called an "emotional and physical breakdown," Carey still remains hospitalized and is "resting comfortably," according to her publicist, Cindi Berger.
Berger said the Glitter postponement was entirely Fox's decision. A studio rep wasn't immediately available for comment, but with Carey already canceling her publicity tour to hype Glitter, Fox presumably didn't want to release the film without her, E! Online reports.
On a related topic, there's no word yet on whether the film's soundtrack will still hit stores as scheduled Aug. 21, most expect the album to drop on schedule. The soundtrack would be Carey's first release for Virgin Records, since signing a $100 million deal with that label (hitsdailydouble.com, 4/2).
Carey has been under psychiatric care at either an undisclosed hospital, at Silver Hill (an exclusive Connecticut hospital specializing in mental illness and addiction) or New York's Northern Westchester Hospital Center (depending upon your news source) since July 25. Carey checked in just days after she made a series of bizarre public appearances and posted several rambling messages to fans on her official website. Messages, much like this one: "Basically, all I really wanna say is I don’t know what’s going on with life… I just can’t trust anybody any more. I’m desperately trying to get out of this room. I’m gonna be taking some time off."
Her publicist cited a breakneck work schedule for the hospitalization. Aside from Glitter and its accompanying soundtrack, Carey also had been shooting another film, Wisegirls, costarring Mira Sorvino, which is due out next February. As a side note, it is on the set of that film that Mariah allegedly threw a salt shaker at costar Sorvino before getting into a wrestling match with her—a story that Sorvino has denied, although we’ve got our fingers crossed for the release of the video.
Glitter was produced by Carey and marks her first-ever lead role. She plays, appropriately enough, an aspiring singer who embarks on a meteoric rise to fame.
