MUSIC ROUND-UP STRAIGHT UP

Brown Falls Down, Knight on Video, King Returns, Herb on Display
BROWN FALL DOWN
Bobby Brown
suffered a seizure and collapsed at his New Jersey home early Wednesday. He was rushed to the hospital after wife Whitney Houston made a frantic 911call. Houston accompanied Brown to the hospital, where he was released 90 minutes later. Houston’s publicists blamed the seizure on intense heat and a hectic recording schedule. "He was literally working nonstop for three to four days, recording his new album," she said. "He hadn’t been getting enough fluid, and basically, he was lightheaded." The hospital did not reveal the exact condition Brown was treated for, but it was obviously some bad shit. Brown is now resting at home with Mariah Carey.

SUGE WELCOMED HOME WITH DVD
On the heels of the release of Death Row head Suge Knight from prison, the documentary "Welcome To Death Row" will be released on DVD September 25. The film chronicles the rise and fall of the rap label and its notorious CEO. Director Leigh Savidge admitted the movie took three years to complete because of obstacles in getting the story of the controversial label and its head. "Telling the story…presented many unique challenges for anyone with the temerity to try," said Savidge. "The people close to this story generally fall into one of two categories: those that made out like bandits, aren’t talking and want the story to simply fade away; and those who were misused, threatened and are simply relieved to have survived the experience." He didn't say what category he fit in.

CAROLE KING ON TOP OF THE "WORLD"
Also coming September 25, singer-songwriter Carole King will release a new album, her first in almost a decade. The set, "Love Makes The World," will be released on King’s label, Rockingale Records through a partnership with KOCH Progressive/KELA. King recruited friends Babyface, Celine Dion, Wynton Marsalis and k.d. lang to guest on the project. "Love Makes" features collaborations with songwriters PopRox, Gary Burr and Carole Bayer Sager. King is launching her website caroleking.com, in conjunction with the album’s release. "Making the album on my own, without the pressure of having to answer to a big record company, where decisions are made by committee, enabled me to make the album I wanted to make." King said. "And I don't have to share any of it with Lou Adler, either. You've got a friend, indeed."

HERB ALPERT, THE EXHIBITIONIST
Herb Alpert
opened his first art show this week at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville. The show, called "Music For The Eyes," was the first museum exhibition for the trumpeter-cum-artist-sum-label boss, though he’s had a number of gallery shows internationally. "It kind of validates you as an artist," Alpert told the Associated Press. "When people see your work in a museum, they have a way of looking at it differently than if you’re just in a regular gallery." After its Nashville run through September 30, the exhibit, including 115 paintings and sculptures, will show at the Virginia Beach Institute of Contemporary Art Dec. 15 through Jan. 15. Especially noteworthy is his work in oil, "A Jerry Moss Nude."
