AND THE GOLDEN BOX OF POPCORN GOES TO…

MTV Hands Out Movie Awards For 10th Time, Will Ferrell Wets Pants For First Time
For a brief moment, one could have mistaken the 2001 MTV Movie Awards for the Oscars.

Gladiator took home the best film trophy and Julia Roberts won for her role in Erin Brockovich, but it was the coveted golden popcorn box not a little golden man that was awarded to both. And, thankfully, Roberts wasn’t on hand to give a four-minute acceptance speech.

Any similarities to the film industry’s biggest night, however, fell short after that—if not solely because of the nomination of the Oscar-overlooked Dude, Where’s My Car?

Mission: Impossible 2, Charlie’s Angels, Meet the Parents and Save the Last Dance (which may have had a bit of an advantage, what with being produced by MTV Films and all) each picked up two awards on Saturday (6/2).

The ladies of Moulin Rouge, or at least the ladies of the hit single from the movie—Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Lil’ Kim—performed their version of "Lady Marmalade." Weezer and Dave Matthews Band also performed.

Vying for highlight of the show honors were two vastly different moments: SNL’s Will Ferrell wetting his pants onstage and Halle Berry shameless plugging both her forthcoming film and her breasts by saying, "If you pay $8.50 and go see Swordfish, you see these."

The show was hosted by Saturday Night Live castmember Jimmy Fallon and Kirsten Dunst (Get Over It, Bring It On) and will be broadcast on the network Thursday (6/7), 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The MTV Movie Awards are chosen by the viewers, or at least by those viewers willing to pay 75 cents to pick their favorites via a 900 call.
