The all-female lineup was emceed by "X Files" star Gillian Anderson and featured heartfelt performances by Sarah McLachlan, Melissa Etheridge, Paula Cole, the Bangles and Mia Doi Todd. Highlighting the evening were headliners McLachlan and Etheridge, who pleased the crowd by performing some of their new material. Seen among the packed house were Ellen DeGeneres and "Ally McBeal" star Portia de Rossi.
Members of the group L7 founded Rock For Choice in 1991 for the purpose of benefiting abortion rights and highlighting pro-choice activism. L7 was motivated by the reality that an increasing amount of pro-choice legislation was being put on the right wing chopping block. Proponents of the event pointed out the event supported a woman's right to choose an abortion and was not necessarily pro-abortion.
The concert hasn't been held the last few years because the political climate was so favorable under former President Bill Clinton, but the arrival of Republican George Dubya has spurred the organization to realize they have a fight on their hands with the suddenly conservative White House. –Craig Hasenbank
