WHO DARES TO EDIT EMINEM?
MTV next week will begin playing "Purple Hills," the drug-themed song by the Eminem-led Detroit group D12, although the channel will limit the video to overnight play, a spokeswoman said Tuesday (6/26). The controversial song is already a toned down version, appearing on the album as "Purple Pills." MTV and the band’s label, Shady Records/Interscope Records, negotiated for several days before the channel agreed to air a version of the video that removes the drug references from the song, which leaves about 35 seconds of music and half a dozen words.

I GUESS YOU ARE THE BOSS OF ME
A federal judge has awarded Bruce Springsteen copyright control of an album of material culled from his early years, dismissing a claim to them by independent music company Pony Express Records. As part of the decision, Pony Express is forbidden from selling any more copies of the album, and has been ordered to destroy any existing copies. "We're thrilled, and I think it's important and significant that Bruce now owns all of his own music," Springsteen attorney Steven Hayes said, "especially the early material, which really, really sucks."

MO STITCHES
Lil' Mo has canceled all public appearances and is resting at home following an attack that required her to get more than 20 stitches in her head. The 23-year-old singer had finished performing at a San Francisco concert when she was struck on the head with a bottle. While no one has been apprehended in connection with the assault, Sean Combs is being sought for questioning.

A SAFE PLACE FOR KIDS TO FEED THEIR FRANKENSTEIN
Shock rock pioneer Alice Cooper has certainly mellowed with age. Besides being a total golf freak, Cooper is donating $75,000 for a new youth center in central Phoenix that he hopes will change kids' lives. No confirmation that the youth center will feature a guillotine.
