TECHNOLOGY IS SCARY

Tech News Is Too, But It Has The Added Bonus Of Being Boring

NOT THAT THIS WILL STOP US, ER, THEM
InnoVal Systems Solutions
today announced new Internet filtering software RiFilter for use with peer-to-peer file swappers. The software, which will be released in early September, blocks most peer-to-peer pornographic content and most pornography websites. RiFilter will be offered free of charge for computers used at home, school, public libraries and organizations providing Internet access to children. This, of course, will not prevent Roy Trakin from downloading porno from his cozy office here at hitsdailydouble.com HQ.

A MUSICMATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
MusicMatch announced its MusicMatch Jukebox had the largest increase in unique users in the first six months of 2001 of any media player. According to a Jupiter Media Metrix report, users grew by more than 1.3 million unique users—a 41.2% growth rate. This represents the largest gain among standalone software programs in the multimedia player category, including all versions of RealNetworks' RealPlayer and Microsoft's Windows Media Player combined. Can I be excused? My brain is full.

WILSON PLUGS IN
As if Brian Wilson wasn’t successful enough, Euphonix today reports that the legendary Beach Boy has found success in using the Euphonix R-1 Digital Hard Disc Recorder. Effanel Music founder Randy Ezratty used the R-1 to record Wilson's recent tribute concert at Radio City Music Hall. Euphonix develops, manufactures and supports networked digital audio systems for music, film & TV post-production, broadcast, sound reinforcement and multimedia applications. There’s your mention—can we get copy of the show now?

MOM WARNED US ABOUT PEER-TO-PEER PRESSURE
CenterSpan Communications Corp. has developed the first multi-sourced peer-to-peer streaming application. The technology will be part of CenterSpan’s C-star P2P distribution platform. Unlike traditional streaming that requires the server and the user’s media player to be in sync for the duration of the stream, the new technology uses a two-pronged approach, pulling from multiple peers instead of just one central server. This cuts down the synchronization time. Because the content stream is broken into segments, rather than delivered as a single large package, the application cuts infrastructure and bandwidth costs. And don’t you just love the phrase "single large package"?

TERMINATOR 2: JUDGE-LAMENT DAY
Irony Alert: Federal judges and their employees will continue to have Internet use monitored—in part because of music downloading. A committee of judges refused to end to the monitoring, though some called the practice improper and likely illegal because some employees are not aware of the policy. Apparently a surge in traffic caused by demand for MP3s of Trinity Garden Cartel’s "Judged By 12" and the Memphis Pilgrims’ "Judge, I’m Not Sorry" caused the ban.

KARAOKE OK
UMG
’s GetMusic soft-launched its karaoke feature yesterday (8/15). The first recordable online karaoke function, it allows users to record their own rendition of popular songs and upload them onto the site or e-mail them to friends and A&R execs. GetMusic’s virtual karaoke bar initially features 93 songs from artists like NSYNC, Shania Twain, R. Kelly, Madonna and Blink-182, among others. Aspiring singers (and non-singers for that matter) can pick a song and record their own version using a PC microphone and the lyrics module—and even post photos. GetMusic will also highlight its "best of" karaoke artists on the site. Don’t have the hardware? Luckily, GetMusic has hooked up with Labtec to supply PC microphones to its users, offering a free Labtec Clearvoice Head Mic headset with purchase from the GetMusic store.
