"[Tom Waits'] inimitable style of storytelling has shaped the sensibilities of countless other songwriters... I just wish I knew what the hell he's talking about."

ASCAP WAITS FOR TOM, WHO NABS FOUNDERS AWARD

Savage Garden, Martin & Carlsson Also Cop Honors At Industry Awardfest
Too bad they aren't holding tonight's ASCAP Pop Music Awards at Duke's, his old hangout.

Tom Waits will be honored during tonight's 18th annual ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with the organization's Founders Award. The reclusive, cult singer-songwriter will also perform at the black tie affair along with the Goo Goo Dolls, Savage Garden (whose "I Knew I Loved You" was named Song of the Year) and Holly Lamar, co-writer of Faith Hill's smash "Breathe," winner of last week's BMI award as Most Played Song of the Year.

Waits will be presented with the award for being an "extraordinary musical storyteller." His most recent albums is the Grammy-winning "Mule Variations," released last year on Epitaph Records. Nicolas Cage will co-present the honor with ASCAP President/Chairman Marilyn Bergman.

Said Bergman: "It gives me particular pleasure to present Tom Waits with ASCAP's most prestigious award. His inimitable style of storytelling has shaped the sensibilities of countless other songwriters. His is a truly rich musical legacy that will enrich generations to come. I just wish I knew what the hell he's talking about."

More than 600 leading songwriters, recording artists, music industry notables and a coupla drunken HITS staffers will attend the bash and salute the songswriters and publishers of ASCAP's most performed songs of the year.

Other winners include Savage Garden's Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones, who will be presented with Song of the Year honors for "I Knew I Loved You." Swedish popmeisters Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson, who have written songs for Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and Celine Dion, will be cited as Songwriters of the Year.

Publisher of the Year honors will be presented to EMI Music, which last week won its fourth consecutive honor from BMI, which held its annual awards soiree at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Modest Mouse will pick up the ASCAP College Radio Award for garnering the most performances on college radio.

Among others who will be honored in tonight's ceremony are Goo Goo Dolls' John Rzeznik, Lenny Kravitz, Diane Warren, Desmond Child, Brian McKnight, Vertical Horizon's Matt Scannell, TLC's T-Boz, Filter, Timbaland and the last HITS freeloader standing.
