DOT-COM FALLOUT DOESN’T STOP THE PRESS RELEASES

Attention Spans, Like the Stock Market, Keep Dropping
GETMUSIC AND MUCHMUSIC GETMUCHMUSIC
MuchMusic USA, not to be confused with its Canadian counterpart MuchMusic—oh, damn, now I’m confused—and GetMusic have announced a collaborative plan to allow viewers to create their own videos online using GetMusic’s online Videolab application. Videos will be included in MuchMusic’s on-air/online Viewer-Made video initiative, which you’ve been buzzing about all summer. Or not, as the case may be.

AT LEAST IT WILL COME IN UNDER BUDGET
Since it cost a reported $30 million to record Michael Jackson’s upcoming Invincible album, the singer and Epic are cutting costs by throwing a contest to have fans direct their own video for his "Rock My World" single. Jackson will pick the winning clip, which will be played on VH1, and the winning creator wins a trip to Neverland to meet the singer. Aspiring directors can download "Rock My World" from VH1.com and send a tape to the channel. Voila! Entrants have one week to get the video to VH1. Hey, any monkey can do it. Children under the age of 12 are encouraged to enter.

DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE'S MICROSOFT CASE CRASHES
The Justice Department—whose motto is "Janet Reno Slept Here"—announced today that it is no longer going to try to break up Microsoft or try to get the Redmond-based company to unbundle Internet Explorer from its operating systems. The two sides have until next Friday to give U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly a status report. Published reports suggest that the public declaration is a part of a negotiation between Microsoft and the government to get concessions or as part of a settlement. We’ll be sure to write about it after our computers stop crashing.

LATE FEES TO DROP
Walt Disney and News Corp. have announced plans to co-venture a Video On Demand website, Movies.com, with exclusive distribution rights for Fox and Disney films. Other VOD sites have to wait until movies have been offered on Movies.com before they can show the films and cable operators must now negotiate with the company if they want to air movies on their own VOD services. Remember, with a 56k modem, it only takes 172 hours to download a copy of Booty Call. Neat.
