FIVE STAR RECORDS HIT THE STREETS

Tool Heads List That Includes Missy Elliott, Weezer, R.E.M. and Depeche Mode
Let's get ready to rumble!

This week's release slate includes five albums that are set for Top Ten debuts, with all having the potential to move more than 100k.

That's right, folks, it's summer Super Tuesday, with this week's big guns including Volcano's Tool, Elektra's Missy Elliott, Geffen's Weezer and Reprise/Warner Bros.' '80s duo of Depeche Mode and R.E.M.

Growing cult band Tool's "Lateralus" is their first since '96's "Aenima," which sold 150k its first week on the way to a current O.T.C. total of 2.2million. Q-Prime's Cliff Burnstein and Peter Mensch picked up the band when they acquired the Zoo/Volcano label with Jive's Clive Calder. The group's popularity has only increased after the success of leader Maynard James Keenan's side project A Perfect Circle and last year's DVD box set, which has sold more than 250k. First-week predictions say it could go as high as 300-350k.

•Missy Elliott's "Miss E…So Addictive" is the hip-hop diva's first since '99's "Da Real World," which sold 130k first week on its way to Platinum sales. Her new album is being fueled by Urban and Crossover play for "Get Ur Freak On." A remixed duet between Missy and Nelly Furtado is featured on Elektra's "Tomb Raider" soundtrack. Retail estimates are in the 200k range.

•Weezer's new, self-titled album is turning out to be one of the true sleeper hits. A follow-up to the band's '96 album, "Pinkerton," which sold a disappointing 480k O.T.C. after the group's three-million-selling '94 debut, the new album has been the recipient of a groundswell of media and fan interest fueled by the band's Yahoo-sponsored tour and well-received appearance on last year's Warped festival. Pundits are saying this one could go over 150k.

•Reprise/Warner Bros. hopes to revive the good old days of '80s PoMo rock with this week's release of R.E.M.'s "Reveal" and Depeche Mode's "Exciter." R.E.M., in the third album of their reported $80 million deal of a few years ago, are doing very little pre-release promotion and once again, won't tour. Depeche Mode, with their first album since '97's "Ultra," which sold 90k its first week and 560k O.T.C. to date, could take advantage of the interest in techno and dance music. Pre-release guesstimates have both in the "100k-ish" range.

This week's chart will once again be dominated by Destiny's Child, with Paul McCartney's "Wingspan" debuting impressively at #2 and headed towards the 250k mark, thanks in large part to last Friday's prime-time ABC-TV special. "Moulin Rouge" is a solid Top Five contender, and looks like it could top 125k, while Sum-41's new Island album, powered by MTV, is on track to go over 60k with a Top 20 finish, comparing very favorably to Platinum-plus bands like Linkin Park and Papa Roach, which sold around 35k their first week out.

In this week's radio news, at PoMo and Active Rock, Most Added appears to be Dave Navarro's "Rexall" from his first solo album, "Trust No One" on Capitol, which hits retail June 19. Sugar Ray's "When It's Over," from their new, self-titled Lava/Atlantic album, hitting the streets June 12, looks headed for Most Adds at Pop radio. In addition, WB has rush-released Faith Hill's theme from the blockbuster summer movie "Pearl Harbor," the Diane Warren-penned "There You'll Be," which is getting tremendous Top 40 radio love.
