Oh well—what do the band members care? They're on both records, anyway.
That very fact could be the double-edged sword that undoes the superstar boy band's reign at the top of the chart. Retail prognosticators, who say at this point that "NOW 7" should sell over 600k this week, have said all along that this installment of the "NOW" series is a little more hit-heavy than the last, which logged 530k in its first week, leading many to believe Vol. 7 would outperform Vol. 6. And among those hits is NSYNC's smash "This I Promise You," from their last humble effort, "No Strings Attached," which sold more in its first week than most records ever do. Even records by international pan flute sensation Zamfir.
Thus, NSYNC itself may be contributing to cutting its own run at #1 short. But as we mentioned before…
WHAT DO THEY FREAKIN' CARE? THEIR LAST ALBUM SOLD 2.4 MILLION FIRST-WEEK! "CELEBRITY" JUST SOLD 1.9 MILLION! NO ONE CAN TOUCH THEM! NO ONE!!! HA HA!! HA HA HA HA!!!!!
Oh… Sorry. Anyway, the numbers, such as they are, break down like this: "NOW" is the biggest compilation franchise out there, and has been steadily building momentum since its introduction in the U.S. The last one, as mentioned above, passed the half-million mark first-week, and many expect this one to do significantly better—an expectation that's now bolstered by one-day numbers. And because compilations traditionally trend up over the week like nobody's business, "NOW 7" is looking like a solid 600k, and may even get a peek at 700k.
NSYNC's "Celebrity," meanwhile, is expected to see a second-week dropoff of about 65%, which has become typical for albums with gargantuan first weeks. "No Strings Attached," for example, went from 2.4 million to 830k in its second week. This means that "Celebrity" should come in at around 660k.
Put 'em together and what have you got? A real race to the finish, with the winner anybody's guess at this point. One consolation for the boys: Either way it turns out, they still get paid buttloads of money. The question, though, is just how many buttloads.
