PORN AND BONDAGE
Those looking for a wholesome money-making operation can look to AOLTW as an example. The company announced yesterday that it is selling $3 billion in global bonds, the proceeds of which mostly will go towards paying off short-term bank debts. The sales of its five-, 10- and 30-year debt night not be an easy sell, due to uncertainty generated from reports of AOL Time Warner's lower than anticipated company profits. However, analysts expect the conglom to post a profit of 20 cents per share—that's four whole minutes of phone time on 10-10-321!
The other approach is one we know more about—"sex sells," as Yahoo has figured out. While the Internet giant today announced that it earned $7.6 million, or 1 cent per share, for the quarter, the company also recently expanded and relaunched its "adult and erotica" store in the company's main shopping channel. That will come as little consolation to the 400 people that the company announced plans to layoff, however. In its effort to gain more profits, and make the joys of debauchery more convenient for the everyday shopper, Yahoo becomes the first high-profile Internet company to jump into bed with the porn industry. The company does, however, test the theory that size matters, requiring all shoppers entering the porn video store to register an e-mail address and credit card number to verify that they are of legal age.
