AN AWARDS SHOW YOU COULD BET ON

BET Holds First Annual Awards Show In Vegas June 19
It’s prudent to wait until you’re old enough to do many things.

You can’t drive until you’re 16, vote until you’re 18, rent a car until you’re 25 and (apparently) hold an awards show until you’re 21.

For the first time in its 21-year history, Black Entertainment Television will host an awards ceremony—the first annual BET Awards—to honor African-American achievement in the entertainment industry. The inaugural event will take place on June 19 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.

The network will telecast the event, which will be hosted by Steve Harvey and Cedric "The Entertainer"—last seen together as part of the "Original Kings of Comedy" tour captured on film by Spike Lee.

"For more than two decades, BET has been a platform for showcasing the best in African American entertainment," said BET President and COO Debra Lee. "Now, for the first time, we will honor the best and brightest performers in the areas of music, film and sports with this historic awards ceremony and telecast."

Awards will be handed out in 15 categories. Boyz II Men, 112, Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg/Nate Dogg, Jagged Edge, Outkast are all up for Best Male Group. Blaque, Destiny’s Child, Mary Mary, 3LW, 702 will vie for Best Female Group.

Nominees for Best Male R&B Artist include Joe, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, R. Kelly and Carl Thomas. Nominees for Best Female R&B Artist include Aaliyah, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson and Jill Scott.

Hip-hop nominees include (Male) Ja Rule, Jay-Z, Mystikal, Nelly and Snoop Dogg; and (Female) Eve, Da Brat, Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim and Trina.

Lil’ Bow Wow, India.Arie, Musiq Soulchild, Nelly and Jill Scott are nominated for Best New Artist.

For a complete listing of the nominees, visit the BET website and tell 'em we sent ya.
