ROCK ISLAND LINE

Legendary Label Breaking American Hi-Fi, Saliva and Sum 41
Chris Blackwell's Island Records was home to some of rock's most influential performers, from Traffic, Tom Waits and Robert Palmer to U2, Melissa Etheridge and PJ Harvey.

And who could forget Frankie Goes To Hollywood?

The new Island, which became The Island Def Jam Music Group after parent company PolyGram was acquired by Universal, is reviving that legacy with three rock acts on the verge of breaking out: American Hi-Fi, Saliva and Sum 41.

Island's Rock Redux

IDJ Chairman Jim Caparro credits the new A&R team that was brought in more than a year ago: "We purposely flew below the radar, but these are quality bands with huge careers. We didn't go to radio until we had the right record and the right set-up. But we haven't hit a home run just yet."

The three bands team up on this summer's "MTV Campus Invasion Tour 2001," which got underway last Friday night (3/30) at Adelphi University in Garden City, Long Island, and runs through April 19 at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. All will be featured this weekend on MTV's "MTV2 Artists To Watch."

  • Boston-based pop-rockers American Hi-Fi's self-titled album has been ignited by PoMo and now Top 40 play on the single, "Flavor of the Weak." The video is currently Top 10 on MTV2, where the band hosted "Booker" last week. They've made appearances on Craig Kilborn, Farmclub.com and the TV Guide Channel. The group will tour with Our Lady Peace after finishing up "Campus Invasion." Stories are on tap in Teen People, Spin, Guitar World, Blender and Details.
  • Memphis rockers Saliva's "Every Six Seconds" came out last Tuesday (3/27), tallying first-week sales of over 20k on the heels of Active Rock and PoMo radio play for its first single, "Your Disease," originally on the "Dracula 2000" ST. The video has already been added to VH1's "Rock Show," and has been played on both MTV and MTV2. The group will follow up "Campus Invasion" by going out with Crazy Town. They've had features in Guitar World, Circus and Hit Parader and were profiled on MTV News.
  • Sum 41's "All Killer No Filler" album is out May 8, with the single, "Fat Lip," among the Most Added at PoMo radio this week, with the video garnering big early support at MTV. Following "Campus Invasion," the Canadian punk-rockers go out with blink-182 and Offspring before joining the Warped tour.

"We took advantage of the individual band's strengths," said IDJ VP Promotion Stu Bergen. "Each one had a real reason to go on the radio... Namely me begging on my hands and knees."
