STUDY FINDS INJURIES PREVALENT IN MOSH PITS

Other Than Stage-Diving, Pass-The-Dude, Slamming, Researchers Are Baffled
You don't see people carted away by ambulance from a John Tesh concert, and a recent study confirms it.

Well, it doesn't confirm that specific fact, per se, but according to research conducted by doctors in Washington, DC, concerts that feature a mosh pit have injury rates that are more than 10 times higher than non-moshing concerts.

"In staffing these events, you really need to be prepared for an increase in injuries," warned Dr. Tim Janchar, an emergency medicine specialist at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

During the mosh pit concerts investigated, Janchar—a mosh pit veteran and former bass player—and his colleagues found 79 medical incidents per 10,000 concert-goers, compared with 11 per 10,000 at non-mosh concerts. Traumatic injury rates were also higher (26 per 10,000 at moshers, 2.3 at non-moshers), as were hospital transports (2.6 versus 0.67 per 10,000) and hospital admissions (4.5 versus 0.3 per 10,000).

Predictably, complaints for mosh pit shows versus the non-mosh pit shows were quite different. Injured mosh-pitters complained about injuries to the head, cervical spine and extremities, while non-mosh-pitters (or "old people," as they are commonly called) complained of headache and dehydration.

Researchers also found that women can suffer from dehydration at all kinds of mass events, since many women refrain from drinking fluids for fear of inadequate bathroom access. Men, of course, will pee anywhere.

Researchers based their conclusions on first aid station visits for 26 concerts at RFK Stadium in DC, of which six were mosh pit events. The concerts included mosh-inducers Social Distortion, Fuel and Blink-182 as well as stand-and-swayers Rolling Stones, Billy Joel and New Kids On The Block. Most were sold out, with attendance roughly at 57,000 (for non-mosh events) and 60,000 (for moshing nights).
