Nation Looks To Music News To Relieve Stress From Boring Undecided Election

AIDS DAY ON MTV
Continuing the fight against AIDS and HIV, MTV announced its global programming for World AIDS Day Dec. 1, including two new specials. "Staying Alive 2," hosted by Ricky Martin, profiles six young adults from around the world who are infected with or affected by AIDS and HIV. The second show is a concert hosted by Arista's Pink and the ever-dreamy Carson Daly. "Music With A Message: World AIDS Day 2000" will have performances from the Corrs, 98 Degrees, Baha Men, Jessica Simpson, Outkast and Mya. The concert will be taped Nov. 21 at New York City's Beacon Theater. MTV will also be airing PSAs from the likes of Victoria and Mel B. of the Spice Girls, Aqua, Master P and the most knowledgeable man in rock about communicable diseases, Ozzy Osbourne.

HOT OLD BAND TEACHES YOUNG WHIPPERSNAPPERS A LESSON
The Beatles, a popular rock band of the 20th Century, have the fastest-selling record in Britain this year. "1," the collection of #1s that looks like it should take #1 on the HITS album chart, sold just south of 320k in England. That qualifies for Platinum over there. Or triple-Platinum in Canada. Or quintuple-Platinum in Florida.

HOPING FOR A LONG TRIAL SO WE CAN MAKE A "CURB APPEAL" JOKE
LeAnn Rimes has filed suit to extricate herself from her deal with Curb. The singer's parents signed the contract for her when she was 12, and then—in a further demonstration of their concern for their daughter's future—divorced in 1997. This suit follows in the wake of a $7 million one that Rimes filed against her father and her former manager. Rimes, now 18, asks that Curb relinquish past work, publishing and recordings now being distributed. "Blue" still brings us to tears.

WHO CARES? MUSICARES.
Paul Simon
was named 2001 MusiCares Person of the Year today. The announcement was made by Michael Greene, President/CEO of the MusiCares Foundation and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, who said, "Paul Simon is a man who brings people and cultures together by promoting unity through music." Perhaps someday he'll be able to bring Chuck Philips and myself together." Simon, who co-founded the New York Children's Health Project to provide health care for homeless children in NYC, will receive the award at a dinner, concert and silent auction Feb. 19. QVC will broadcast live from the auction, offering items to those of us losers who will have to watch it on TV.

JOHN APOLOGIZES TO REID
The riveting trial involving Sir Elton John and his flamboyant lifestyle took a turn Friday (11/17) as John ended his three-day grilling on the stand by apologizing to his former lover/manager John Reid for bringing up Reid's alleged criminal past during Thursday's (11/16) testimony. On Friday, John apologized for his statements, saying he was tired and had been "badgered" all day. "It's something I regret saying," John told a packed courtroom from the witness box on Friday. "It was a very irresponsible remark to make at that time... I don't think it had anything to do with [Reid's] financial judgment." John is suing accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers for negligence in managing his affairs and Andrew Haydon, who worked for Reid, for wrongly charging him for expenses. Despite the apology, John returned to the criminal references, telling the court that his ex-lover had punched a woman in the face in New Zealand and had gone to prison for it. "He used to slap me around as well," he added. "But I asked him to, so I guess it's not really relevant."

DRUNK, VIOLENT GUY ABLE TO BREED
Oasis singer Liam Gallagher is expecting a baby with his girlfriend Nicole Appleton of the group All Saints, a British tabloid reports. Gallagher, who was granted a divorce two months ago from his actress wife of three years, Patsy Kensit, has been dating Appleton for about five months. "Bloody well right, I ain't shootin' no blanks," the singer said. "Hope the litt'l one don't interfere with my partyin', and its mum understands the needs that go along with being a rock star." An all-star benefit is being arranged to raise funds for the kid's lifelong therapy bills.

AGUILERA CANCELS MEXICO PERFORMANCES
Christina Aguilera on Friday (11/17) canceled concerts scheduled for the weekend in Mexico City after seeking medical attention for a throat infection. "Christina Aguilera was given medical attention in Mexico City and requires complete rest," her reps said. "The infection has made it impossible for her to perform. The doctors have strictly prohibited her from engaging in any activities so that her health is not put at risk." Fred Durst could not be reached for comment.

BACKSTREET BOYS TRAMPLE TOKYO
American pop group the Backstreet BoysA.J. McLean, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Kevin Richardson and Nick Carter—arrived in Tokyo to promote their latest release and caused quite a stir. At least ten people were injured when a crush of fans with cameras in hand swarmed around the bus carrying the group as they drove away. "When NSYNC showed up, only five kids got hurt," an observer said. "This is probably just the first of NSYNC's records the Backstreet Boys will break this week."
