L.A. Operatives Weizman and Kassan Will Pitch Secure File-Swapping To The Biz
"In effect, this is what Napster could have been." How many times have you heard that?

So says Howard Weizman, who, along with Michael Kassan, will head up the Los Angeles-based Digital Media and Entertainment unit for Oregon-based technology company CenterSpan.

The company, which recently won the bidding for the assets of multimedia file-sharing company Scour—including popular client software Scour Exchange—believes it has the solution to the industry's desire for a secure swapping service.

Weizman and Kassan both come from the world of Digital Rights Management (DRM), having been CEO and President, Media/e-Commerce, respectively, for Massive Media Group, which specialized in such technology.

Weizman, an entertainment attorney for some 30 years, also served as EVP, Corporate Operations, for Universal Studios and has served on the boards of numerous Internet companies.

"Howard and Michael will lead our efforts to build revenue-generating business relationships with content partners in the music and filmed entertainment industry," noted CenterSpan Chairman/CEO Grank G. Hausman. "And they don't notice that every time they talk about this digital rights stuff, my eyes start to glaze over."

Some observers believe that with Napster's baggage and its endorser Bertelsmann's competitive relationship—as owner of BMG—with the other label groups, a comparatively neutral entity that has embraced security and copyright from the outset is uniquely positioned to take the lead in the race to develop a secure file-swapping subscription service with major-label content.

"It's one of those things that helps connect the dots of what we're doing," says Corporate Marketing Director Keith Halasy. "We've been putting together the system behind the Scour exchange; the addition of Howard and Michael is important for us to take what we've done to the entertainment industry. Their experience and expertise will open a lot of doors for us. Which is good because the L.A. office headquarters for CenterSpan's partnership development have a lot of doors."
