DRUGS, CONTRACTS, DEATH & PETTY THIEVERY

Its Like A Day In Congress Only More Musical

LIFE IMITATES COMEDY
Foreigner
singer Lou Gramm has filed a complaint for declaratory judgment in a New York Supreme Court seeking to free himself from a 1985 contract, which he has so far been unable to fulfill. According to the contract, signed at Foreigner's high-point of popularity, EMI owns 50% interest in all musical compositions written by Gramm as well as 100% control over how the compositions are licensed, performed and published for the remainder of his life. The only way out of the contract (other than death, of course) is if Gramm can deliver two more albums at a major record label defined by the contract as CEMA, BMG, Sony, MCA, PolyGram, WEA or any label distributed by one of those labels. According to Gramm's suit, the singer has been "totally unable to obtain a record contract with any company and there is no realistic prospect that at this late stage in the game either Gramm or Foreigner will be able to obtain a record contract." Hey! Wait a minute! That was going to be our punch line!

OH, FOR A CHORUS OF "THE ROOF IS ON FIRE"
Ponderously important Irish rock band U2 will play a rooftop gig in Dublin today (9/27), evoking memories of the band's performance on a hotel roof in Los Angeles 13 years ago. The musicians will take to the roof of the Clarence, to record a video for two new songs, "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation," from their upcoming album "All That You Can't Leave Behind." U2 singer Bono explained, "Since trying to be the Beatles didn't work the first time, we figured we'd give it another go."

WAITING TO EXHALE
Mum's the word on Whitney Houston's drug charges. The diva has not made a public statement regarding the decision by Hawaiian prosecutors to pursue drug possession charges against her. In January, Kona airport security allegedly discovered about half an ounce of marijuana in Houston's baggage. Since security has no legal right to detain passengers, Houston was allowed to board a plane to San Francisco. Houston has until Oct. 26 to appear in Kona District Court to contest the petty misdemeanor charges. If convicted, Houston faces a maximum 30 days in jail or $1,000 dollar fine. According to deputy prosecutor Charlene Iboshi, if Houston decided to plead guilty, she could do so through paperwork without appearing in court. As for Houston's silence, a spokesperson posed the question: "Ever try to talk with your mouth full of pot brownies?"

SO, THIS IS NOT THE END?
The Doors
gathered in a Los Angeles studio Tuesday (9/26) to tape an episode of VH1's "Storytellers." The event marks the first time the band performed together since 1993. Guest vocalists Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Ian Astbury of the Cult, Travis Meeks of Days Of The New, Scott Stapp of Creed, Pat Monahan of Train and Perry Farrell each took a turn at emulating frontman Jim Morrison, whose 1971 death prevented him from attending. Manager Danny Sugerman said the Doors may play a handful of live dates next year in both Europe and the U.S. Actor Val Kilmer has shown an interest in fronting the band, but mostly because no one else will hire him.

THIS JUST IN...JIM MORRISON IS STILL DEAD
Meanwhile, the lease on Jim Morrison's Paris grave is due to expire July 6, 2001, the 30th anniversary of his death. Relatives of people buried near Morrison's grave have complained of fanatical Doors pilgrims and petitioned against renewing Morrison's lease, but the surviving Doors members say they are confident Morrison's body will not be disinterred from the Pere Lachaise cemetery. "After all," said guitarist Robby Krieger mysteriously, "maybe his body's not there at all."

THE TEMPTATIONS OF THE TEMPTATIONS
Otis Williams
, the founder of the Temptations, says $43,000 in jewelry was stolen from his Ohio hotel room over the weekend. Williams reported that three diamond rings, a Rolex watch, a gold medallion on a rope chain and credit cards were taken from bags in his room at the Springfield Inn, where he was performing. Police said they couldn't explain why Williams had $43k in jewelry but was staying at the Springfield Inn.

MATCHBOX 2.0
The stolen guitar of matchbox twenty guitarist Adam Gaynor has been returned along with an apologetic letter from the thief. The green Taylor acoustic guitar was returned undamaged Monday to a Florida radio station by two men. The guitar was stolen Sept. 18 during the band's performance at the University of Florida (hitsdailydouble.com, 9/20). "I'm terribly sorry," read the note left by the thief, "I thought I had grabbed a guitar from some band called matchbox twenty. I didn't realize this was the same band as the multimillion-selling Matchbox 20. My bad."
