In the most exciting news since Mark McGwire's $30 million contract extension, Trans World Entertainment Corporation today (2/28) reported net income that exceeded expected earnings per share.

The company, which operates stores such as Camelot, Record Town, Disc Jockey, Planet Music, Strawberries Music and Coconuts Music and Movies, reported net income of $40.1 million (or 89 cents a share) on sales of $553.4 million for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 3, 2001. Those numbers were up from net income of $60.6 million (or $1.12 per share) on sales of $517.9 million for the same period the previous year.

For fiscal 2000, the company's net income was $40.1 million (or 83 cents a share) on sales of $1.4 billion, compared to newt income of $61.4 million (or $1.15 a share) on sales of $1.4 billion in fiscal 1999.

Gross profit as a percentage of sales decreased to 35.2% in fiscal 2000 from 36.8% in fiscal 1999.

The company's lucky lotto numbers for the year were: 17, 32, 44, 61, 63 and 70 with a Powerball of 8.

"As expected, our fourth quarter results were impacted by a difficult retail environment and lower than expected results form new releases," said Robert J. Higgins, Trans World Chairman, CEO and utility infielder. "However, we saw an improvement in comparable store sales during the month of January. And I'm really excited that Spring Training has started."
