HEARTBROKEN ARE A NEW TARGET MARKET
MP3.com and Sephora.com have announced a contest to help people who have been dumped get over it. The, er, “Get Over It” contest gives grand-prize winners a “celebrity-style” weekend in NYC. Contestants must submit a story about the break-up and a photo or video by Sept. 6. Winners get a shopping spree at a Sephora Store and “a possible appearance on national television.” Meaning, “If you scream loud enough, maybe you'll be in a crowd shot on ‘TRL.'” Perhaps MP3.com is just trying to mend its broken heart over the RIAA. We feel you.

HIGH SPEED MUSIC FOR COMPAQ HANDHELD
NetChip Technology, Inc., announced today that Compaq Computer Corporation has selected NetChip's high performance USB device controller, NET2890, for the new iPAQ Personal Audio Player PA-1. The iPAQ, is a hand-held device that enables users to rapidly download digital music files from the Internet through a USB interface to a PC. The PA-1's USB transfers are enabled by NetChip's NET2890 USB device controller, the highest performance chip on the market for USB 1.1, requiring a Read/Write cycle time of only 67ns. This translates to a 100Mbps burst data rate, eight times faster than the 12Mbps specified on USB 1.1. No one has any idea what all of those numbers mean, but doesn't it make us look all tech-smart?

ALLIGATOR BITES CLICKRADIO
ClickRadio, the free, secure, Internet-enabled digital radio service today announced that it has signed a deal with Alligator Records, to license its music for the service. Alligator Records joins UMG, BMG and several independent labels that have granted ClickRadio interactive radio licenses. Because nothing says the blues like the Internet.

FINALLY, SOMETHING COOL
DirecTV is launching "Music in High Places," an adventure/travelogue/music series that takes musicians to ancient sites and has them perfom acoustically at each location. Expanded versions of each episode will be available at MSN. The first episode, features Alanis Morissette filmed on location at the Navajo Nation's Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. It debuts Oct. 6. A portion of the proceeds from the "Music in High Places" franchise goes to the GRAMMY Foundation. The project also intends to build awareness for the need to preserve some of Earth's endangered sites, as designated by the United Nations' UNESCO. Plans are underway for "Music in High Places" to debut on a “major cable network” in January of 2001. Or something like that.
