WORLD’S LARGEST MUSIC ROUNDUP

A Cornucopia Of Music News So Large, Robert Earl Hughes Could Be Buried In It

SILVER METAL
The hard rockers and harder drinkers of Motorhead are celebrating 25 years together as a band with a 40-track greatest hits album on Metal-Is Records. "The Best of Motorhead" includes "Ace Of Spades," "Bomber," "Overkill," "Please Don't Touch" (performed with Girlschool as Headgirl) and four previously unreleased concert cuts from the early ‘80s. Lead singer Lemmy's mole and liver also plan to celebrate the milestone.

DON'T ROCK THE JUKEBOX
A 12-year-old boy was violently attacked for playing Eminem on a jukebox. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the 18-year-old from Milwaukee chased the boy, grabbed him and nearly choked him over a pool table when he heard the controversial rapper. The boy, in turn, bit his attacker on the arm. Police charged the man with physical abuse of a child. The man defended himself by saying that he had been upset by the choice of track, but was only "messing around." Reports he committed the act to get the attention of Christina Aguilera were not founded.

ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS, KNIFE?
Four people were injured Sunday (9/10) when a knife-wielding fan went berserk during an Iron Maiden concert in at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA. One man is in serious condition at an area hospital, suffering a punctured lung, while the others were treated for minor injuries. No arrests have been made in the attack. Authorities are questioning how the attacker smuggled the weapon past security. According to one eyewitness, "I think the dude was just trying to trim the other guys' mullets."

AT THE DOWNLOAD
Indie label Grand Royal is going digital. The label announced plans to release new titles on both physical and downloadable formats. Its first dual offering is Texas punks At The Drive In's "Relationship Of Command," which was released Sept. 12. The label's downloadable albums are being distributed through EMI Music's digital distribution partners Liquid Audio and Amplified Holdings. The files are encoded in formats by Liquid Audio and Microsoft's Windows Media, which incorporate security against unauthorized copying. Grand Royal's digital releases are being sold by online retailers including Tower Records, Best Buy,Virgin Jamcast and Musicland's Sam Goody, On Cue and Suncoast.

AS POPULAR AS THE BRUCE WILLIS FILM "MERCURY RISING"
Manchester's Badly Drawn Boy's "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" took home the coveted 2000 Technics Mercury Music Prize Tuesday at the Grosvenor House in London. BDB (aka Damon Gough) nabbed England's most prestigious album award and its 20,000 ($28,000) purse, beating out Richard Ashcroft, Coldplay, Doves, Leftfield, the Delgados, and Death in Vegas, among other groups no one in the States has heard of or cares about. Badly Drawn Boy's disc will be released Stateside Oct. 3 on XL Recordings/Beggars Group. If you haven't heard of BDB, it only means that you're an American citizen.

BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING FUNNIER THAN A DICK JOKE
Blink-182
guitarist Tom DeLonge announced that he is changing his stage name to Lode Swallowere, according to Launch.com. MCA Records released a statement that read, in part, "Following in the footsteps of Big Baby Jesus and The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, DeLonge has decided that he is now big enough to have an ‘official stage name.' Lode Swallowere has demanded that all materials—not yet printed—bear his new (and puzzling) moniker." Apparently, simply changing his first name to "Dick" was deemed far too subtle.

REVENUES UP, HOS DOWN
Electronics and music retailer Best Buy's second quarter revenues increased 18% to a record $3.17 billion and earnings jumped 32% to $76.7 million. Digital product sales are being credited for the boom. In June, Best Buy began selling electronics, music and movies on its Web site, adding computers and peripherals in August. Best Buy plans to open 45 more stores this year, including 11 in the New York area.

CONSIDER THE SOURCE
Thesource.com, the online subsidiary of the hip-hop publication, began airing exclusive footage of the widely publicized altercation that halted the taping of The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards Show last month. Several camera crews, on hand to cover the Aug. 22 event, were in position at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to capture the action. "We put the story on the site because it's news," said David Mays, President of The Source Enterprises. "But rather than rush to publish an incomplete, sensationalized report, as is so often the case on the Web, we chose to investigate and present a responsible, balanced piece of work." The "balanced work" reveals that violence at the show erupted after Mack Daddy Tony Bennett threatened to bust a cap in Big Pimpin' Steve Lawrence's ass, which sparked Lil' Eydie Gorme to go off!

THIS TOUR GOES UP TO 11
Metal band Pantera has solidified a headlining tour that will feature Kittie and Morbid Angel in support. The month-long trek kicks off Nov. 7 in Biloxi and makes stops in Orlando, Pittsburgh, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City and Dallas. "What no L.A. date?" hissed HITS' metal maven Rich Ortega as he chewed pieces of aluminum and experimented with his new "home tattooing" kit. "I don't understand why Pissing Razors, Spine Shank and Cephalic Carnage are not booked on this tour as well. Now that… would kick ass!"

AND, BY LAW, THIS TOUR GOES UP TO 4
Def Leppard
is still complaining about the Salem, OR, ordinance that kept the band from rocking out as loud as they could. The band nearly walked away from a gig at the Oregon State Fair on Sept. 2 after learning of the ordinance—which limits volume to 100 decibels, reports Pollstar. The group told unsatisfied fans that they could get a refund on their $20 tickets. About 47,000 people took advantage of the offer. Surprisingly, the venue's capacity is 3,500. "We're cashing in on shitty shows from years past," a refund seeker served up. "Do you think Rainbow, the Scorpions and Judas Priest will offer a similar deal? That could very well be my 401K plan."
