THE BALLAD OF SLIM SHADY

Manchester Police Check Eminem For Drugs, While His Family Comes Out Of The Woodwork
After countless protests, those stodgy Brits have welcomed the misunderstood Marshall Mathers III into their hearts.

Not really, but stranger things have happened in the saga of Slim Shady.

Police in Manchester spent much of Friday (2/9) poring over videotapes of Eminem's British concert debut to see whether the rapper encouraged fans to take drugs.

According to Reuters, rumors are circulating that Em urged fans to take Ecstasy during Thursday (2/8) night's performance. "We are particularly looking to see if he was inciting people to take drugs," said Manchester Chief Inspector Steve White. Rumors that the police simply wanted a bootleg Em video went unconfirmed at press time.

More than 15,000 fans witnessed Em bring a chainsaw onstage and simulate his own death in an electric chair. Outside, more than 100 gay and women's rights activists protested the controversial concert, chanting, "Eminem you're not funny, you oppress us to make money"—a rhyme the rapper later pilfered.

"The basic reason why we organized the protest," said National Union of Students' gay and lesbian campaigner Vicki Austin, "is the fact that Eminem's lyrics are not only homophobic, they are also misogynistic."

Protesters forced the rapper to change hotels during his stay in Manchester.

There's a little more love for the prejudiced little prankster on this side of the pond, as the prodigal Papa Mathers reached out to his son.

Eminem's father, Marshall Mathers II, told English paper The Mirror he wants to make amends with the boy he abandoned.

"I desperately want to meet my son and tell him that I love him," said the elder Mathers. "I'm not interested in his money. I just want to talk to him. I want him to know that I'm here for him if he lets me back into his life. Did I mention that I wasn't interested in his money? Because I'm not."

His olive branch comes as Eminem's mother considers dropping the $10 million lawsuit she filed against her son.

"That's something we are seriously thinking about." Debbie Mathers-Briggs told Reuters. "We're working on it."

According to Mama Mathers, the suit was meant more as a scare tactic. "When I saw the attorney, he was to send Marshall a letter warning him to stop being so demeaning and that if he didn't stop the lawyer would hit him with a lawsuit," she said. "The next thing I knew, my son was hit with a $10 million lawsuit. I walked up to my attorney and he said, ‘Well, this was a wake-up call.' I was in shock."

Even Eminem's granny is on the reconciliation bandwagon. Grandma Betty told the BBC: "I would like to stop this war between us because life is too short."

She explained her grandson is "a very kind, loving and caring father." She paused, then added, "And he's got ass-loads of money now where before he had none."

"Everywhere he goes—to a McDonald's drive-in to give his daughter a sandwich or shopping with his family—there is always somebody coming up to him, wanting an autograph... He has no life anymore."

The McDonald's employees who make the rapper's Filet-O-Fish fresh every time had no comment.
