MUSICIAN.COM PLUGS IN

Online Resource For Aspiring Musos Suggests You Tip Waitresses, Try The Meatloaf
Musician.com, the multifaceted online resource for up-and-coming artists, celebrated its launch today. A collaboration between retail chain Guitar Center, Guitar.com and MusicianFirst, the site offers an array of resources, including interviews with industry execs and stars, recording advice, access to a musicians' community, gear reviews and lessons.

The site's founders hope these free offerings will entice users to pay for services like A&R reviews, CD mastering, manufacturing and insert production, tour-planning consultation and studio referral, as well as products like, well, guitars and stuff. An array of contests is also in the offing—and even a "Musician's Friend Platinum" credit card, which sounds like a ticking time bomb of debt to us. But then again, we buy ramen in bulk.

This Web venture will be competing for eyeballs with Tonos, which also hopes to dominate with its mixture of expert advice and a la carte paid services. And as you know, it's a great time to be one of two online services tussling for the same consumer niche.

The netco's co-founder, former Warner Bros. VP/GM Jeff Gold (the other founder is producers' and execs' supermanager Steve Moir) also announced the naming of Musician.com's management team, which includes former Geffen prexy Robert Smith and Mainspring's ex-VP Biz Dev/Sales Vic Lanzillotti as Co-Presidents/Co-COOs.

Other principals include former 4AD CEO Robin Hurley as EVP, Music, Guitar.com President/COO Sanjay Malkani as VP Marketing and Product Development and former MP3.com VP Biz Dev Larry Langs as SVP, Strategic Planning.

"Never before have musicians been able to access the quality and breadth of resources, services and expert advice that we are offering on- or offline," proclaimed Gold. "Now, your band can take that gig at the Taco Shack with confidence."

Commented one musician, "Wow, that Web site sounds great—wish I could afford a computer. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go sell my blood for plasma so I can get my amp out of hock."
