WIRED GIVES OUT AWARDS

People, Inanimate Objects, Vague Concepts
All Walk Away With Trophies
In San Francisco last night (10/12), Wired magazine hosted its Readers Raves 2000 awards show, which celebrates the best in tech: the most influential people, products and Web sites.

Host David Spade, musical guest Beck and presenters Courtney Love, Daisy Fuentes and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown helped keep the night interesting.

The list of nominees and winners is as eclectic as the magazine itself. Most Wired Product Design, for instance, went to the Chrysler PT Cruiser, beating out a computer display (Apple Cinema Display) and a running shoe (Nike Air Presto Unisex).

The evening's top honor, the Wired Visionary, went to Sun Microsystems Chief Scientist Bill Joy, who—as odd as it seems—beat out AOL CEO Steve Case and Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan.

Napster walked away with four awards, including Best Guerilla Marketing, Most Innovative Web Startup, Best Music Site and Tech Renegade (which went to founder/programmer Shawn Fanning).

Shockwave.com won the Best Rich Media Site over Icebox.com, despite Icebox's tremendously offensive "Mr. Wong" series. Surprisingly, Hitsdailydouble.com wasn't even nominated, despite wonderful links such as this and this.

Other winners included the Nokia 8860 (Best Wireless Phone), the Palm VII (Most Wired Tool), Google.com (Most Intelligent Agent) and Amazon.com (Best Shopping Site).

Most desperate programmer went to the guy who posted this message on Scifi.com.
