"[Radiohead] is one of those bands that transcends all typical early-read sales barometers. They are already living legends, and they did it without radio or even much publicity."

POMO ROCK’S ON A ROLL

First-Day Sales On Radiohead, Green Day Exceed Expectations
In a week when teenpoppers 98 Degrees failed to meet sales expectations, it looks like rock has come roaring back into the marketplace, with impressive first-day showings by both Radiohead and Green Day.

Radiohead's eagerly anticipated "Kid A" was embraced by its fans, with initial sales indicating the album will do between 150k-175k, which would land it solidly in the Top Five of next week's HITS album chart. All this without any kind of radio or video airplay.

"It's incredible," gushed Music Millennium's Terry Currier, who reported retailers all over the Pacific Northwest were doing great business. "Their fans are as dedicated as you could ask for. We don't get records like this often, where you get that oomph on street day, so it was really great to see. The satisfying thing about it is that it's all fan-driven. It's great to see the community come out without any radio play."

Our own retail gurus had Radiohead doing anywhere from a low of 65k to a high of 150k in its first week. Wherehouse Music now predicts Radiohead will be their #1-selling record. The band's last album, ‘97's critically kudoed "OK Computer," sold 50k its first week on its way to a total of 1.2 million OTC.

Added Best Buy Sr. Buyer Kevin Engler: "This is one of those bands that transcends all typical early-read sales barometers. They are already living legends, and they did it without radio or even much publicity."

Meanwhile, veteran punk-rockers Green Day's "Warning" album is its first since ‘97's "Nimrod," which sold a mere 80k first week on its way to a total of 1.6 million, largely on the strength of the hit single, "Time Of Your Life." Based on first-day sales totals, the Green Day album could also do between 150k-175k, landing it in the Top Five.

Added Best Buy's Engler: "Green Day has been able to maintain their initial fan base and capture a younger generation at the same time. Now, will you excuse me while I dye my Mohawk purple? Thank you."
