GRAMMY CHIEF ON GEORGIA’S MIND

NARAS Boss Nominated for Induction Into Georgia Music Hall of Fame; Chuck Philips Lodges Official Protest

NARAS President/CEO Michael Greene has been nominated as a 2000 Georgia Music Hall of Fame inductee. Even though he started as a musician, with a stint in the prog-rocking Hampton Grease Band, Greene has been nominated in the non-performer category for the prestigious (it says here) Georgy Award, along with Antonio "L.A." Reid and Tom Wright. Performers Trish Yearwood, the B-52's and R.E.M. will compete in the performers category, while Little Jimmy Dempsey, Wally Fowler and Ralph Peer will vie for a posthumous honor.

The B-52's, Yearwood, Tim Wilson and Joe Stuckey will perform during the celebration, which will be led by Governor Roy E. Barnes and Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor. The Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards are marking their 22nd anniversary. The Award has been presented annually since 1979 for candidates who live or have lived in Georgia, demonstrated leadership, made a significant impact on the music industry and has been the subject of more than four Chuck Philips L.A. Times investigative reports.

Previous honorees include Ray Charles, Johnny Mercer, Otis Redding, James Brown, Joel Katz, Chet Atkins, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Allman Bros. Band, Travis Tritt, Mike Clark and Gram Parsons.

Greene has been NARAS President/CEO since 1988. He served as CEO of the Atlanta-based Video Music Channel, one of the industry's first cable video music channels.
