ITALIAN CELL PHONES AND CHINESE JUKEBOXES

Bertelsmann’s Italian Portal, MusicMatch’s "Sina" The Times
Now you can hear Internet music whether you're on your scooter in Rome or raising your bean sprouts in Beijing.

An alliance between Bertelsmann's Italian site tj net and publicly traded software developer Interactive Intelligence will result in the availability of Net music and other content via cell phones in Italy.

II's Enterprise Interaction Center will provide the tools for the service, having already worked with Bertelsmann's telecommunications/IT arm. Germany's Qnet SYSTEMS and Italy's CallNet will implement the technology.

This should make driving around Italy—already a relaxing experience—even more peaceful, as drivers navigate their Alfa Romeos through crowded city squares with Nokia flip-phones jammed to their heads so they can rock out to "La Metallica."

"We had one ambitious objective—to be the first to launch an interactive entertainment service promoting music and news on demand over mobile phones," reports tj net CEO Paolo Roatta. "We looked at solutions from some of the major vendors and chose EIC for its flexible IVR capability and scalability and—mama mia, I'm late for my three-hour Chianti break. Ciao, bella."

Meanwhile, digital music management application MusicMatch Jukebox will soon be featured on Sina.com, a site for Chinese populations worldwide. The software, which lets users download, record and organize music tracks, should expand its profile just a smidge with a potential user base of, oh, say, a billion or so.

Sina.com already offers news, shopping, job opportunities and special chat rooms on yak-milking and praising the glorious people's revolution. Trouble is, after an hour, you want to download again.

"With the addition of Chinese to its growing list of supported international languages, MusicMatch is delivering digital music to an even broader international audience," crowed the company's CEO, Dennis Mudd. "All hail MusicMatch! Death to the counterrevolutionary music-management applications!"
