AOL OFFERS INSTANT MESSAGE SOLUTION
New Solution Counters Company’s Initial "Why Not Just Have Everyone In The World Use AOL" Plan
Two days after federal antitrust enforcers began investigating AOL's dominance of instant messaging, the online giant made its first gesture toward allowing open access to its closed messaging system.
On Thursday (6/15), America Online submitted an 18-page proposal to an Internet task force outlining how it could make its instant messaging system work with competing systems.
Currently, users of AOL's Instant Messenger can only send instant messages to other AOL users.
The conciliatory gesture comes at a time when regulators are reviewing AOL's proposed $113 billion buyout of Time Warner, leading competitors to speculate that it was a more political than technical move.
