Former Chris Blackwell loyalist Larry Mestel is expected to be named Executive VP/GM at Arista Records, second-in-command to newly anointed President/CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid.

Most recently, Mestel was COO of Blackwell's Palm Entertainment. Before the Palm Entertainment gig, Mestel served as the COO of Island Entertainment Group, the company that helped make Blackwell a music industry legend.

Talk of Mestel's appointment surfaced at the BMG Distribution convention currently taking place in Toronto. The convention appearance of former Columbia promotion honcho Jerry Blair, whose appointment to a high-level post at Arista has been expected for weeks (hitsdailydouble.com, 7/6), fueled speculation even further. Blair has yet to be officially named to the new Arista team, but sources said, the deal would likely be done imminently.

Mestel, who reports to Reid, will oversee business affairs, international, finance, production, special markets, administration, sales (non-creative) and West Coast operations.

Meanwhile, over at Artemis, they've decided that two Dannys are better than one.

Veteran record exec Daniel Glass, who did stints at Chrysalis and EMI Records before becoming President of Universal Records, has been named President of Artemis Records by Artemis Records/Sheridan Square President/CEO Danny Goldberg.

Goldberg said the announcement does not signify any change in the inner workings of the company, where Glass was previously Executive Vice President. "This is a reflection of the leadership role Daniel is already playing here at Artemis. Working side-by-side with him has been one of the most enjoyable and productive experiences of my career. Aside from fishing for mudsharks with Led Zeppelin, that is."

Added Glass: "I shared Danny's vision that an independent could be successful in today's marketplace. In a short time, our team has proven that we can attract real artists and give them media, radio and Internet exposure as well as touring opportunities all over the world. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go hump some gear for Kittie."

The label recently received Gold albums for Kurupt's "The Streetz Iz A Mutha" (Antra/Artemis) and Kittie's "Spit" (Ng/Artemis). Other recent Artemis releases include Steve Earle's "Transcendental Blues" (E Squared/Artemis) and the Baha Men's "Who Let The Dogs Out" (S Curve/Artemis).
