IS RADIO THE NEXT NAPSTER?

Gotuit Media Inc. Enables Users To Record Music Off The Air
Who needs Napster when you've got a radio and a recording device?

Gotuit Media Inc., an Andover, MA-based start-up founded by a former chief executive for MicroTouch Systems, Inc., a $150 million touch-screen maker, is set to launch its SongCatcher software, which lets users record songs from the radio directly to their computers.

Jim Logan founded the company a year ago and has already raised $2.1 million from a group that includes Berkshires entrepreneur Bo Peabody.

After users plug a home radio in their PC's audio or microphone jack, the free SongCatcher software works like a VCR to fetch data from Gotuit identifying songs and artists and indexing the material to create a personal jukebox. The recorded songs are then delivered to the user's e-mailbox, where they can be deleted or saved.

Logan insists his company is not infringing copyrights like Napster. "We feel we're on pretty solid ground here. After al people have been able to tape sons from the radio and programs from television for years. Just please don't let hilary rosen',390,400);">hilary rosen',390,400);">Hilary Rosen know about."

Alan Sutin, a New York lawyer and expert in copyright issues, says Gotuit can avoid the Napster problem as long as users record songs for personal use only. "Only if there's file-sharing involved can they expect to have trouble."

Gotuit also plans to offer a service that lets users download their radio recordings to portable players. He also plans to offer users a chance to purchase CDs when they hear songs they like. They are also tackling the TV market as well, with an indexing ability which allows viewers to scan recordings on a set-top box to find the shows they want to see and delele the rest.

The company's board includes Harvard Law School professor Terry Fisher, Quantum Corp. founder Joel Harrison and iCast's Brian Zisk.
