DISNEY’S PROFITS UP

But Think How Much Better Things Would Be If Only The AOL-TW Merger Didn’t Go Through
On Thursday (8/3), the Walt Disney Co. reported a sharp increase in income for the third quarter, including a doubling in profits at its broadcast unit. The numbers beat Wall Street expectations.

Disney reported its net income rose 48% to $633 million from $427 million. Disney's earnings per share rose 50% from 20 cents to 30 cents and revenues rose to $5.96 billion from $5.45 billion.

However, those numbers excluded the disappointing performance of Disney's Go.com Internet group, which has been renamed the Walt Disney Internet Group. Oh yeah, that's the ticket. That's what was wrong all along. It was just a bad name. Including Go.com, Disney's net income rose 79% to $440 million from $246 million, and diluted earnings per share rose 75 percent to 21 cents from 12 cents.

Financial results at the company's consumer products and studio entertainment divisions also lagged. But thanks to the ongoing domination of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," now airing between 14 and 37 times a week, profits continued to rise.

"We had another set of strong earnings," said Disney Chairman michael eisner',390,400);">michael eisner',390,400);">Michael Eisner. "The momentum continues to build, thanks largely to continued strength of media networks. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm overdue for an egging of steve case',390,400);">steve case',390,400);">Steve Case's palatial manse."
