51-Year-Old Music Fan Is Mad As Hell, Encourages Others Not To Take It Anymore
Perhaps just in time for the site to be closed down.

With a portentous judgment looming at midweek, the backlash over the anti-Napster campaign has reached a brand new level. Now, instead of Internet surfers being encouraged to aim their displeasure solely toward disgruntled metal gods Metallica, a target has been placed firmly on the Recording Industry Association of America.

Bill Evans, a 51-year-old seller of travel books unrelated to the jazz pianist of the same name, has started up Boycott-RIAA.com. The site urges consumers to boycott RIAA recordings and labels during the month of August and to join an anti-RIAA petition drive.

Evans was spurred on by the recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on downloadable music. "I got so riled up that I went home Friday evening, took a two-hour nap and pulled an all-nighter just to get [the Web site] out by Saturday morning," Evans told Webnoize.

Evans says he's not promoting illegal file copying and that his site is not-for-profit. The link to the RIAA-boycotted merch simply helps support the costs of maintaining the site.

Previously, for music fans like Evans, that Metallica/RIAA-driven dissatisfaction could only be expressed online through sites like PayLars.com, which "gives Metallica fans the chance to make a donation to the band to make up for all the revenue the band thinks it's losing to online MP3 trading." So far, PayLars.com has raised $527 for the band. CampChaos.com also has a series of animated shorts poking fun at Metallica's anti-Napster stance. The first, and still best, being "Napster Bad."

"Napster, MP3.com and many fan sites have basically created a new distribution network that threatens the traditional distribution network," Evans said. "Personally, I would love to have access to every song ever recorded available to me 24 hours a day."
