VICTORY RECORDS SUES NAPSTER
The Chicago-based label claims Napster is infringing on its copyrights by allowing users to trade songs by Victory artists. Napster is already the target of copyright infringement lawsuits filed by the RIAA, TVT, Metallica and Dr. Dre.
In this suit, Victory is demanding that Napster "remove all music" from its artists, which includes Earth Crisis, Snapcase and Hatebreed.
A Napster spokesman asked, "Who are these bands? Who is this label? Who in their right mind is downloading this stuff?"
Insiders added that even one trade of a song by Victory artists Earth Crisis, Snapcase or Hatebreed, would probably increase their collective exposure ten-fold.
Is this a publicity ploy so the relatively unknown label and its even less known acts can gain exposure by taking the much-talked about and troubled site to court? "Naaah! It's the music business. Everything is on the up and up," offered an informed Victory spokesman. "All we want is the $4.32 royalty check that is due us."
