No Doubt Fans Get Brutal, Led Zep Goes Hollywood And The Disco Ball Stops Spinning

YO, BUM RUSH THE SANDBOX
Five people were injured when thousands of frenzied pop fans rushed the stage during No Doubt's concert Wednesday (8/2) at the Mesa Amphitheater near Phoenix. Three of those who received injuries were minors. Witnesses said the melee broke out when someone noticed free milk and cookies near the stage. Singer Gwen Stefani reportedly refused requests to kiss the boo-boos and make them all better, but offered free navel rings to the survivors.

THE SOUNDTRACK REMAINS THE SAME
For the first time ever, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page have agreed to license Led Zeppelin material to a soundtrack. "That's The Way" will appear on the soundtrack for "Almost Famous," the fictionalized account of rockcrit-turned-filmmaker Cameron Crowe‘s ["Say Anything," "Singles," "Jerry McGuire"] experiences as a teenage Rolling Stone reporter, with Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs. Three other Zeppelin songs can be heard during the film. Although Ratner and Stacey rocked out to "Kashmir" during their date in the Crowe-penned "Fast Times At Ridgemont High," Led Zep had only issued its materialon its own SwanSong/Atlantic label. Plant and Page agreed to the licensing on the condition that Spicoli would be guitar roadie for the band's next reunion tour. The Beach Boys, the Who, David Bowie and Lynyrd Skynyrd will also appear on the soundtrack, which drops September 12 on DreamWorks Records. The film is slated to hit theaters September 15.

They Might Be Giants
, but they're not too big to fit on the "Malcolm In The Middle" soundtrack. The soundtrack to the irreverent FOX sit-com, due out October 24, marks TMBG's return to Restless Records. The disc features TMBG's theme song, "Boss of Me," as well as "Cyclops Rock, "a collaboration with former Soul Coughing vocalist M. Doughty. The band's pairing with Green Giant sidekick Little Sprout failed to make the cut.

BOOTY-SHAKIN' NO MORE
A freak bulldozer accident claimed the life of the original guitarist for KC & the Sunshine Band. Jerome Smith was killed Wednesday (8/2) at a West Palm Beach, FL construction site. Smith, who played on the Sunshine Band's classic disco tunes, including "That's The Way I Like It, " "I'm Your Boogie Man" and "Get Down Tonight," had been working as a bulldozer operator when he slipped and fell under his vehicle. Authorities said Smith's platform shoes and Angel Flight pants hindered his driving ability.

MOONDOGGIE GETS MAD
Surf drummer and producer Richard Delvy claims MCA Records wiped him out of royalties. On Tuesday (8/1), Delvy and his Miraleste Music Company filed a breach of contract and fraud suit against MCA regarding surf music classics ''Surfer Joe" and "Wipe Out." According to the complaint, MCA is supposed to pay Miraleste a royalty when a third party uses the recordings, under both a 1963 agreement and the settlement of a 1997 suit, which gave Delvy 14% of certain income from the recordings. Delvy claims the label has not provided accounting since January 1998 and has hidden licensing fees from various commercial and film usage. Delvy estimates he is owed more than $100,000, but says he'll gladly settle for a puka shell necklace and a ride to Zuma Beach.
