UJA HONORS DOYLE, KRIM

You don’t have to be Jewish to be honored with the UJA-Federation of New York’s prestigious Music Visionary Award during its luncheon tomorrow afternoon (7/12) at the Pierre Hotel, but it couldn’t hurt.

The organization will honor MTV EVP Music and Talent Strategy Amy Doyle, who recently married into the faith, while VH1 EVP Talent and Music Programming Rick Krim might just pull out his bar mitzvah suit, if he can still fit into it.

“I’m humbled by the honor,” says Amy. “It’s a big grandiose title I’m not sure I’m worthy of, but if I had to put it into words, I am fortunate enough to work with an amazing team of people who bring music to the forefront, and I’m able to champion their vision and bring it to the biggest, loudest possible place.”

Krim is also proud of his role in shepherding new acts to the public, both through VH1’s successful “You Oughta Know” initiative, and increasingly through music placement in the network’s variety of programming. “I feel we’re able to do even more for artists this way than just running videos, though we do still devote hours to that.”

The money raised benefits the Federation’s campaign to help fund more than 100 health and human service agencies in the New York area and across the country, with a portion of the proceeds earmarked for Music for Youth, which gives kids in the area access to musical instruments and education.

“I learned about the UJA through attending the luncheons,” says Amy, who was recruited to help raise funds by Glassnote Records ruler and industry vet Daniel Glass. “They spread that money across so many diverse initiatives, really helping people.”

The pair also had their eyes opened by a visit to the Bronx House, which serves the local community with various outreach programs, including music education and access to instruments.

“It was great to walk the halls and see this diverse community benefiting from having a center that offers these kinds of opportunities,” says Amy. “We all know the power of music and what that can do for kids who aspire to be artists some day.”

“That’s a mission we’ve had here at VH1 since we started our long-running Save the Music program,” says Krim. “So it was a perfect fit for us.”

Past recipients include Atlantic Records Chairman/COO Julie Greenwald and Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman, Kevin Liles, Sony Music’s Clive Davis, Universal Republic/IDJ Chairman/CEO Barry Weiss, Epic Records’ L.A. Reid and Def Jam founder Russell Simmons. The award will be given by Vice Chairs of UJA-Federation’s Entertainment Division Fred Davis and Glass.

For newlywed Doyle, a nice Irish girl, being selected for this honor also helped her score points with her in-laws. “Absolutely,” she laughs. “Now all I have to do is learn how to make potato latkes.”

Added Krim: “That might make a nice addition to the chicken l’orange on the menu.”
