Comps Are Compelling as Guardians of the Galaxy ST, Now 51 Own This Week's Chart

Hollywood’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1, the OST to the blockbuster Disney/Marvel flick, hits #1 on the HITS Building Albums Sales Chart, bringing in 103k in its third week (+81%).

The soundtrack is packed with classic-rock and retro-pop gems, including The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” and the Five Stairsteps’ “O-O-H Child.” It’s basically our drunken karaoke dream come true.

By the way, the film is currently the #2 movie at the box office with $41.5m in its second week (around $176m to date).

NOW’s Now 51 debuts with 95k, making it a close second, while Republic’s Godsmack comes in third with 55k.

Also earning Top 10 bows are Loma Vista/Concord’s Spoon (#4, 36k) and Island’s The Vamps (#10, 20k).

Capitol’s 5 Seconds of Summer proves that there’s no end in sight for this heat wave, as they grab the #5 slot with just under 36k in their third week.

Speaking of hot, Disney’s other smash motion-picture soundtrack, Frozen (#6), comes in with an additional 32k in its 37th week (-4%). Frozen daiquiris are on Ken Bunt.

Capitol’s Sam Smith has pitched a tent in the Top 10, coming in at #7 this time with a respectable 27k.

Classic rock fills in the Top 10 with last week’s #1 from Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersHypnotic Eye (#7, 32k, -74%), via Reprise, and Eric Clapton’s J.J. Cale tribute (#9, 26k, -56%), via Bushbranch/Surfdog.

Also notable, Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party rocketed up 39% with 16k at #13, powered by last week’s CMA Music Festival.

Streeting at presstime are albums from Gaslight Anthem (Island) and American Idol winner Caleb Johnson (19/Interscope).

If you look into the horizon, Ariana Grande’s highly anticipated My Everything (Republic) is just around the corner. It streets 8/25, the day after she performs her current single, “Break Free” f/Zedd, and “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj on the 2014 MTV VMAs.

In other news, Blue Swede never answered our fan letter from 1974.
