XL/Columbia Grammy winner Adele’s 21 continues to be the year’s top-selling album, with 3.8 million in sales since January, for a total of 9.6 million to date.

Sony, UMG Gap Tightens; Columbia, Republic Top Labels
With the top two albums of the year so far in holdover Adele (3.8 m) and newcomers One Direction (1 million), Doug MorrisSony Music maintains its slim lead over ex-colleague Lucian Grainge’s UMG in total marketshare at the seven-month mark.

Morris’ monolith now leads Grainge’s empire by a razor-thin 1.3 percentage points (30.2 to 28.9), though the outcome is reversed when it comes to TEA (Track Equivalent Albums), where UMG leads by a percentage point (30.0 to 29.0). If you add UMG and EMI, the total is 39 in total marketshare and 39.2 in TEA.

In new releases, Team Stringer/Barnett’s Columbia Records (12.0, +1.8 over last year) continues to hold off #2 Monte Lipman’s Universal Republic (7.9, +1.9), which is bolstered by Top 10 efforts from newcomer Gotye (#9) and Young Money/Cash Money’s Nicki Minaj (#10), with Drake (#11) just below.

Atlantic Records (5.9, -.3), whose biggest hit was from fun. (#16), continues to lead Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Geffen A&M (5.6, -1.7), led by Madonna (#13), though both are running behind last year’s results.

Peter Edge and Tom Corson’s RCA Music Group, with Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits at #4, score at 4.5, an upward move of .3 percentage points from last year, while Steve BartelsIDJ nestles in below with 4.0, down 1.5 percentage points from last year, with Justin Bieber’s Believe (#6) leading the way. Dan McCarroll’s Capitol Music Group rises +.1 to 3.4, with Now 41 at #5.

Rob Cavallo and Todd Moscowitz’s Warner Bros. Records is next at 3.2, thanks to the Black Keys (#15).

In the Country field, Gary O’s SME Nashville is up +.2 to 3.0, with 19/Arista Nashville Idol alum Carrie Underwood (#8) in the Top 10, while Capitol Nashville, is up a whopping +1.4 to 2.7, thanks to Luke Bryan’s smash Tailgates & Tanlines (#7) and Lady Antebellum (#14).
