MARKETSHARE MANIA ON THE CUSP OF Q4

UMG Leads Sony Music; Republic Is the 2013 New-Release
Label Champ, but IGA and RCA Are 1-2 in TEA
With Labor Day now in the books and the Q4 onslaught on the horizon, Lucian Grainge’s UMG leads Doug MorrisSony Music, 38.3-30.0. In TEA (Track Equivalent Albums), Universal’s share drops 0.4, but its lead widens slightly.

On the new-release front, Monte Lipman’s Republic enjoys a sizable lead with a whopping 9.1 (up 1.5%), and looks to dominate in that sector for the remainder of 2013, followed by the rejuvenated RCA of Peter Edge and Tom Corson (7.5, up 2.9%), and then a virtual dead heat between Rob Stringer’s Columbia (6.5, -5%) and the IGA of Iovine, Janick and Berman (6.2, up 0.6). Our own I.B. Bad has gone so far as to declare Republic the #1 label in new-release share for the entire year—four months before the finish line (see page 12).

Republic’s Q4 slate includes highly anticipated releases from Drake, Lorde, Jack Johnson, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande. But when we add TEA to the label equation, it’s a whole different picture. IGA moves to the front of the pack with 7.3, followed by RCA (7.2) and then Republic (7.1), with Columbia just behind (6.9). In this competition, IGA’s lead looks as insurmountable as does Republic’s in the new-release derby; the label is loaded for bear in Q4, with event releases pending from Eminem, Lady Gaga and Scotty McCreery. For its part, RCA will roll out a second Justin Timberlake 20/20 installment, Miley CyrusBangerz and new ones from Chris Brown and Kings of Leon, with a possible Britney Spears album as well. Columbia has Beyonce, One Direction and Nine Inch Nails, among others.

Steve Barnett’s Capitol Music Group is next in currents, with Katy Perry on the way, followed by Mike Dungan’s UMG Nashville, which passes Atlantic after getting a recent boost from budding superstar Luke Bryan. We suspect Dungan is right pleased, y’all, to once again have Capitol Nashville, home to Bryan, Darius Rucker, Lady Antebellum and Keith Urban, under his spreading umbrella. Steve BartelsIDJ, with Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Rihanna and Fall Out Boy, holds the #8 position while enjoying a nearly half percentage-point year-over-year gain. Big Sean, 2 Chainz and Avicii fortify its Q4 slate.

Cameron Strang’s Warner Bros. matches IDJ’s upward move, with Blake Shelton, possessor of the seventh-ranked album, the primary contributor, followed by crooner Michael Buble. Gary O’s Sony Nashville rounds out the Top 10, giving Music City 20% of the leaderboard, which warrants a parting yee-haw.
