EMI Prepares Digital-Only Beatles Release, Kobalt Inks McCartney’s MPL Pub Catalog
Almost half a century after forming in Liverpool, The Beatles continue to make news.

A pair of announcements were made this morning, including the Fab Four’s 14-track iTunes digital exclusive, Tomorrow Never Knows, available starting today, and Kobalt Music Group’s signing of Paul McCartney’s publishing company, MPL, which includes his post-Beatles solo work and an impressive list of standards.

Tomorrow Never Knows offers a collection of 14 Beatles rockers, as well as a free stream of “Hey Bulldog,” from Yellow Submarine, also available as a paid download at the iTunes store here.

Since first launching worldwide in Nov. 2010, The Beatles’ exclusive digital releases on iTunes included the band’s 13 legendary re-mastered studio albums, a special digital edition of the Grammy-winning Beatles Stereo Box Set, the two-volume Past Masters compilation, the classic 1962-1966 (Red) and 1967-1970 (Blue) collections, the Grammy-winning LOVE album and All Together Now, the feature-length documentary about the making of The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil, the band’s remastered Anthology music collections, the best-selling 1 hits collection and associated ringtones, the restored Yellow Submarine feature film, and a free, interactive accompanying picture book.

The 14 tracks on Tomorrow Never Knows include “Revolution,” “Paperback Writer,” “And Your Band Can Sing,” “Helter Skelter,” “Savoy Truffle,” “I’m Down,” “I’ve Got a Feeling,” “Back in the USSR,” “You Can’t Do That,” “It’s All Too Much,” “She Said, She Said,” “Hey Bulldog,” “Tomorrow Never Knows” and “The End.”

Meanwhile, McCartney and MPL inked an exclusive, long-term deal with Kobalt Music Group Ltd., one of the world’s largest, privately owned music publishing companies, which took effect July 1, to administer the songs of three of his catalogs—MPL Communications, MPL Music Publishing and Cherio Corporation—outside the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland. MPL encompass one of the largest collections of classic hits by Paul McCartney, as well as over one thousand major songwriters and composers.

Kobalt Founder/CEO Willard Ahdritz said: "We are honored that MPL has chosen Kobalt to be its administration company outside the U.S., Canada and U.K./Ireland. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Paul McCartney and MPL, and to represent this prestigious publishing company, which includes some of the most timeless hits ever written."

An MPL spokesperson said: “Kobalt is a forward-thinking, state-of-the-art company with excellent leadership and staff and is a great fit for our catalogues. We are excited to see what new opportunities this relationship will present.”

The MPL Communications catalogue includes all of McCartney’s post-Beatles solo material, works by Linda McCartney and songs by McCartney & Wings. Major hits include "Ebony and Ivory," "Say Say Say," "Jet," "My Love,” “Band On The Run," "My Brave Face," "Listen To What The Man Said," "With A Little Luck," "Spies Like Us," "Silly Love Songs," "Vanilla Sky," “Freedom,” “Dance Tonight” and the recent single, "My Valentine," among many others.
