DYLAN'S 1966 ELECTRIC TOUR GETS

Dylanologists need to clear more shelf space next to the behemoth The Cutting Edge 1965-1966. Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings are upping the ante again, releasing a 36-CD box set of 1966 concert recordings from Bob Dylan’s U.S., U.K., Europe and Australia tours on 11/11.

Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings are culled from the Dylan-goes-electric tour when he backed by members of The BandRobbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson—and drummer Mickey Jones. Much as The Cutting Edge was an eye-opener about one of the single most fertile periods in recording history, The 1966 Live Recordings aims to demonstrate how that tour half a century ago changed the sound and direction of rock and pop music around the world.

 "While doing the archival research for The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, we were continually struck by how great his 1966 live recordings really are," said Adam Block, President, Legacy Recordings. "The intensity of Bob's live performances and his fantastic delivery of these songs in concert add another insightful component in understanding and appreciating the musical revolution Bob Dylan ignited some 50 years ago."

One part of the set, a Manchester, England, concert  from May 17, 1966, was released  as Bob Dylan Live 1966 – The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 in 1998. Other than a handful of tracks that have shown up on compilations, The 1966 Live Recordings features performances that have never been officially released.

Naturally the set includes the actual Royal Albert Hall Concert, a show that bootleg aficionados thought they owned back in the 1970s. (Tapes of the Manchester show were used on the famous TMQ bootleg). Columbia/Legacy will issue The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert, which CBS Records recorded, on 12/2 as a double CD and 11/26 as a two LP set.
